SORORITY HISTORY --

On November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, IN., seven women joined together in a shared vision of the enlightenment and education of women. Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little and six teachers: Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Downey Martin and Cubena McClure created a legacy

with one common goal: Greater Service and Achievement through higher education. What began as a small group of women in the Alpha Chapter at Butler University has expanded to over 400 chapters in the United States, Bermuda, the Bahamas, the U.S. In addition to the work of sorority members, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has also developed several national programs to provide community service to the world. In order to reach women from all ages, education, and backgrounds Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority also has two affiliate groups that assist with the sorority’s promotion and execution of projects, programs and activities. These affiliate groups are known as the Philo Club and the Rhoer Club. For more information about Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., our national programs, affiliate groups and other information, please visit our international website: www.sgrho1922.org. CHAPTER HISTORY --

In 1927, Soror Helen Brooks of Alpha Chapter, Indianapolis, Indiana National Organizer responded to the invitation extended by Sorors Roberta Anderson Maloney and Ida Laws of Eta Chapter (undergraduate chapter at Northwestern University in Chicago) and organized Delta Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Chicago. Inspired by the goals of the national chapter these charter members began their activity of community service and expansion through a close working relationship with Eta Chapter. The story of the growth and development of Delta Sigma Chapter cannot be told with the inclusion of its grass roots, which were deeply imbedded in Eta Chapter. Eta Chapter was the first Sigma Gamma Rho Chapter established in Chicago Illinois in 1925. Most of its members were inspired to work for a graduate chapter in the city. After graduation, most of the members later transferred into Delta Sigma.

Psalms 103:13
As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.
God knows exactly who we are, and God is compassionate. God loves us all with all of our challenges and flaws.

We Remember, We Rise

Juneteenth is more than a date, it is a powerful reminder of resilience, freedom, and the ongoing pursuit of progress. As women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., we honor the sacrifices of those who came before us while continuing to uplift our communities and create pathways for future generations.

Freedom is our foundation. Progress is our purpose.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, consider these meaningful ways to honor its legacy:
Give Back – Engage in service initiatives that make a lasting impact and support the needs of your community.

Invest with Purpose – Support Black-owned businesses, entrepreneurs, and organizations that contribute to economic empowerment and growth.

Learn and Lead – Reflect on the history and significance of Juneteenth, share that knowledge with others, and participate in conversations that inspire understanding and action.

Together, we remember the past, celebrate the present, and continue the work of building a more equitable future for all.
