An Unexpected Party, the first chapter of The Hobbit, inspired probably my favorite Tolkien illustration of all. My enduring fascination with wizards, dwarves, runes, beards, pipes, and steins may all trace back to this painting from the 1977 Tolkien calendar. Raise your hand if you had Tolkien calendars on your wall in the 1970s!

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien was first published 85 years ago today. It's still a great read.
