So as many of you may know, Spoken Cafe has been on the long long road to eliminating single use cups. Part of this process has been introducing .ware . This is a library cup system and for a small refundable one time deposit, you can get a lovely stainless steel insulated travel mug that you "check out" from us to use for that days coffee needs. Next time you pop in (like the next day) you can check that mug back in and we'll give you a fresh new mug. Right now we have close to a couple thousand mugs out in the neighborhood and many of them are multiples per person and many of them have been checked out and just never returned. This system is meant to be used as a library system so bring them cups & lids back y'all!!! Thank you for supporting our endeavors towards sustainability. Bring those cups back WITH the lids. Thank you!!

Join the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition and the 47th Ward Green Council THIS THURSDAY for a rally against the Peoples Gas rate hike and for the Clean & Affordable Building Ordinance.
Thursday, October 19, 11 AM
Illinois Commerce Commission Meeting, Bilandic Building, 160 N. LaSalle 8th Floor, Chicago IL, 60607
RSVP: bit.ly/stopPGratehike
After breaking profit records year after year, Peoples Gas is pushing the biggest rate hike in Illinois history. The $400 million increase would raise our bills by more than $140 per year. Already, one in five Peoples Gas customers are in debt to the utility, and this rate hike will only make the Chicago home heating affordability crisis worse.
Join us Thursday, October 19th at the Illinois Commerce Commission to say NO to the rate hike! We will then walk across the street to City Hall to advocate for the Clean and Affordable Buildings Ordinance to ensure a future of lower utility bills and healthy buildings. Rather than wasting money on failing fossil fuel infrastructure, it’s time to start the transition to clean, affordable, all-electric homes.
That’s why we’re calling on regulators to say NO to Peoples Gas rate hike and YES to the Clean & Affordable Building Ordinance.

The end of this month is fast approaching and it is the cutoff date for donations for Heart of Lincoln Square Neighbors Association's Save Your Ash campaign to be able to pull permits in time and save these trees! DONATE HERE: https://donorbox.org/save-your-ash-2023
The Emerald Ash Borer is still a threat to all ash trees and since the city has removed their program to inoculate and save them, unfortunately it is still on private citizens to cover this treatment. They make up about a third of our local urban canopy and HOLS currently has only enough donated to save about half of the over 300 trees within their civic area, several of which are surrounding Winnemac Park. All donations go directly to the trees.
