The talented students from brought their rovers to life during the last day of the Women in Engineering Summer Program 2.0 for community college students. The Beetle Bugs, Team Ghost, Racing Reapers, and El Pollo Loco all had their run through a maze using object-avoiding rovers they built and programmed with an Arduino Uno microcontroller. These students did an incredible job throughout the program, and we envision bright futures for each of them. We can’t wait to see where they go next!

This was the first ever crossover event where our WIESP high school and WIESP community college students intertwined for an incredible workshop led by an even more incredible professor, Dr. Gonzalo Bello!🚀💫 Thanks to UIC Professor, Dr. Bello, our students we’re introduced to data science and how it helps us understand complex issues by analyzing and organizing large amounts of data. Students also had a wonderful opportunity to hear from our College of Engineering recruiter, Oscar Herrera, and Melissa Hernandez from BreakThrough Tech Chicago! We are so grateful for the opportunity to introduce our students to some truly incredible humans in our college! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

and recently celebrated International Women’s Day 2024 with and the Women of Color in Engineering Collaborative to acknowledge the resilience, achievements, and contributions of women and non-binary engineers worldwide! The event also highlighted ongoing efforts for gender equity and empowerment. Attendees connected with student organizations and UIC units led by women and participated in a painting activity to pay tribute to women pioneers in STEM. As Jennifer Dalzell, our guest speaker, reiterated, International Women’s Day is a reminder to be inclusive in our policies and practices to ensure women and non-binary people have equitable computer science and engineering opportunities.
