Nabeel Sohail, a School of Computing student finishing up his bachelor’s in cybersecurity and minor in computer science, has been selected as CDM’s student commencement speaker, and will address the Class of 2024 at the ceremony on June 15.
Nabeel was raised in Chicago and the northwest suburbs and has been into cybsercurity since he was about 10 years old. “It began with me breaking my parents’ laptop (software-wise) and fixing it, then following hacktivist groups because it sounded cool.” During his time at CDM, he’s complemented his cybersecurity learning with related internships at ALDI USA and Discover Financial Services.

When I was younger, my parents gave me a laptop, and I often played video games like Club Penguin and Roblox. I broke the computer a few times trying to install mods, but instead of crying about it, I learned to fix it myself. I was inspired by online groups and games like Watchdogs, which led me to...

“Our vision is to make the [health informatics] program more about AI and healthcare specifically. That includes the data science side of things, like machine learning, and the technology and digital health side. Given our location in the heart of one of the world’s major cities, we’re uniquely positioned to build something special in the health informatics space. We want to make it accessible, not just to computer science people, but also to clinicians who want to increase their tech skills."

Assistant Professor Roselyne Tchoua's new research combines AI and human elements in healthcare to keep at-risk patients from falling through the cracks. Using a machine learning model called the random forest, Tchoua compiled data of patient survey responses and analyzed the patterns in the data. She employed the random forest classifier because it allows transparency in its decision-making. “You can’t just have the machine tell you the answer,” says Tchoua. “You want it to tell you why.”

DePaul University School of Cinematic Arts students were star-struck when several actors and creators of the TV drama “Breaking Bad” made guest appearances in Stew Lyons’ online Creative Producing course in the fall of 2023. Serendipitously timed with the 2023 actor and writer strikes in Hollywood, the creative producing course featured multiple guest speakers from the show, including creator Vince Gilligan and lead actor Bryan Cranston, as well as other actors, directors, executive producers and wardrobe designers.
“The 10 weeks I took this course turned out to be one of the most influential periods of my life,” says student Spencer Milligan.

Did you know CDM has 15 undergraduate and 16 graduate programs that are STEM-designated by the Department of Homeland Security? These programs produce graduates educated in science, technology, engineering and/or math who help support U.S. economic competitiveness and growth. Plus, international students who earn degrees from STEM programs can qualify to extend their post-graduation stay in the United States for Optional Practical Training. The newest program to receive STEM-designation is our MA in Digital Communication and Media Arts, which uniquely bridges two colleges, CDM and DePaul University College of Communication.
