The Schoolhouse Mobile Kitchen Project popped up today at storytime !

Can you guess the storytime theme?

Flatbreads are a staple in many cultures worldwide, each with its own unique preparation, ingredients, and flavors.

Here are a few we prepare in cooking classes:

• Naan (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan) – A soft, leavened bread traditionally cooked in a tandoor.

• Tortilla (Mexico, Central America) – A thin flatbread made from either corn or wheat, used for tacos, burritos, and more.

• Lavash (Armenia, Iran, Turkey) – A soft, thin flatbread often used for wraps.

• Injera (Ethiopia, Eritrea) – A spongy, sourdough flatbread made from teff flour, used as both bread and a plate.

Each of these flatbreads has a deep cultural significance and is often enjoyed with regional dishes. Do you have a favorite or one you’d like to try? Perhaps you have a favorite that isn’t listed? Comment below!

Each week across Chicagoland, our bright and caring instructors bring FUN cooking classes to 250+ students, ranging from preschoolers through high schoolers.

Our team of 15 instructors connects with students each week after school in science labs, art classrooms, and teacher’s lounges! We meet students right where they’re at with empowering life skills and GOOD FOOD 🍲 🍩🥒🥞🍜

It’s official! Mobile Kitchen Project (MKP) is now a proud program of Schoolhouse Kitchen + Studio, growing from a simple idea that began in 2017. It all started when our founder, Cheryl Knecht, partnered with her local YMCA to teach summer campers how to cook. Together, they harvested vegetables from the community garden and prepared a delicious Veggie Fried Rice. :)

Eight years later, MKP has expanded to serve hundreds of students each month. Under the enthusiastic leadership of Alison Carchi and her amazing team of chef instructors, MKP takes its fun, hands-on cooking programs on the road to schools, libraries, museums, and beyond!
