[HPV VACCINE SAFETY SCARES ARE A COMMUNICATION PROBLEM THAT CAN DERAIL CANCER PREVENTION. BUT COUNTRIES CAN RECOVER.]

The HPV vaccine is one of the most thoroughly studied vaccines available and is a safe, effective way to prevent cervical cancer and several other HPV-related cancers. But even a safe vaccine cannot protect people if fear and misinformation stop families from choosing vaccination. This can happen during a vaccine safety scare, when false reports of vaccine side effects spread, causing people to worry that a vaccine may be unsafe, which in turn leads them to delay or refuse vaccination.

Our team examined HPV vaccine safety scares in seven countries: three high-income (Denmark, Ireland, Japan) and four middle-income (Brazil, Colombia, India, Mongolia) countries. We looked at how each safety scare began, how it affected vaccination, and what helped countries rebuild public confidence.

Here's what we found:

- In all seven countries, investigations found that the reported health problems were not caused by the HPV vaccine.
- The scares often grew when personal stories of alleged harm were widely shared through news coverage and social media.
- Delayed responses, political involvement, and the lack of a prepared and timely crisis communication plan allowed misinformation and fear to spread.
- Five countries experienced widespread declines in HPV vaccination, Brazil experienced a major regional decline, and vaccine introduction or active recommendation was suspended in some countries (e.g., India and Japan).
- Every country eventually increased vaccination coverage or restarted its program, although several have not yet returned to their previous vaccination levels.
- Denmark offers one example of recovery. After HPV vaccination coverage fell to 47%, a national campaign led by health authorities, cancer organizations, and medical professionals helped coverage rise to about 89%.

The experiences of these countries point to four important lessons for vaccination programs: 1) respond in days, not years; 2) build a coalition across government, health, and community; 3) lead with cancer prevention messaging; and 4) communicate everywhere people get information, including across both traditional and social media.

Vaccination safety scares are a communication problem that can have lasting negative consequences for cancer prevention. Vaccination programs need to be prepared and equipped with trusted messengers and a fast, coordinated response to keep people protected against preventable cancers.

[HPV VACCINE ADMINISTRATION IN CHILDREN, ADOLESCENTS, AND YOUNG ADULTS: THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC]

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is important for cancer prevention. Many preventive healthcare services were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We wanted to understand whether this issue applied to HPV vaccination as well.

We examined how HPV vaccine administration changed among privately insured people in the U.S. before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Using nationwide private insurance claims data from 2019 through 2022, we measured the percentage of people between the ages of 9 and 26 who received at least one HPV vaccine dose during each month and year. We also examined patterns by age, s*x, and rural versus non-rural residence.

We found that:

- HPV vaccine administration dropped sharply after the COVID-19 public health emergency was declared in March 2020. Annual administration remained lower below 2019 levels through 2022 across all age groups.

- Compared with 2019, the percentage receiving at least one dose in 2022 was 6.0% lower among children ages 9-12, 38.3% lower among adolescents aged 13-17, and 42.5% lower among young adults ages 18-26.

- The largest declines occurred among rural children (13.5%), male adolescents (39.8%), and rural young adults (46.0%).

Overall, our findings indicate that HPV vaccine administration among privately insured people remained below pre-pandemic levels through 2022. The findings highlight the need for continued monitoring and targeted strategies to increase HPV vaccination, particularly among adolescents, young adults, males in these age groups, and people living in rural communities.

🌺 Meet our intern: Quan Le! 💫

Quan is a rising senior at Baylor University, majoring in Biology with a concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology on the Pre-Medical track, graduating in May 2027. 🧬

🌟 Fun fact about Quan
Quan is from Vietnam, he also spent 5 years in Singapore before continuing his education in the U.S.

🔬 What projects have Quan been part of in the lab?
Since June, Quan has contributed to many of the lab's studies. He worked on Project HERO, a digital health study focused on improving HPV vaccination among Vietnamese American families. He also worked on the RCASIA Brain Health Literacy Project, MOVE24 and a project investigating factors that influence mental health services use in older Asian American. 📚 Across all four, Quan built skills in qualitative research, survey design, and scientific writing.

💼 How has being involved in Dr. Vu's lab supported his career?
Quan believes medicine is as humanistic as it is scientific. He hopes to become a physician who not only develops and delivers treatments, but who also understands the patient populations he serves, what they experience, and how to make sure the advances of modern medicine actually reach them. Dr. Vu's team studies exactly that. The lab builds strong community partnerships to understand Asian American health behaviors and translates those insights into culturally appropriate interventions that help Asian American communities access health services and build healthy habits. His time in the Vu Lab has shown him how research reaches beyond scientific inquiry and into care that families can actually understand and use, a perspective he expects to carry into every patient encounter ahead. He is grateful to Dr. Vu and the team for their mentorship and support throughout the summer.

🌱 What has been the most meaningful thing he learned from the internship?
Relationships matter as much in research as they do in life. Alongside our research this summer, our lab ran outreach events with community partners across Chicago. We taught elementary and middle school classes, tabled at a Vietnamese festival, spent time with the community we are learning from. Super rewarding experiences!

[DELAYED CARE SEEKING AMONG AMERICAN MUSLIM WOMEN: WHY PROVIDER GENDER MATTERS]

Delaying medical care can negatively affect a person’s health. Although barriers such as cost, insurance, and transportation can influence when people seek care, the healthcare experience itself also matters. For some American Muslim women, receiving care may involve concerns about preserving modesty and a preference for a female clinician.

We wanted to understand which religious and sociodemographic factors were associated with delaying medical care when a female clinician was perceived to be unavailable.

In this community-based survey, we recruited 254 English-speaking Muslim women at mosques and Muslim community events in the Chicago area. Most participants were age 40 or older, and the sample included nearly equal proportions of African American, Arab American, and South Asian women.

The survey assessed religiosity, religious fatalism, experiences of discrimination in healthcare, modesty, alternative medicine use, worship practices, and whether participants had delayed seeking medical care when no female physician was available.

Here is what we found:

53% reported delaying medical care when they perceived that no female clinician was available.
76% had health insurance, and 85% had access to a primary care physician.
70% described themselves as “very religious.”
93% agreed that maintaining Islamic modesty was important to them.

After accounting for sociodemographic factors, women who rated themselves as very religious and those reporting higher levels of modesty had greater odds of delaying care. In contrast, women who had lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years had lower odds of delaying care.

These findings highlight the importance of offering gender-concordant clinicians whenever possible and creating healthcare environments that respect patients’ religious values, modesty concerns, and care preferences. Because the study involved a community-based sample from the Chicago area, additional research is needed to understand whether these findings apply to other American Muslim communities and different types of healthcare visits.

[CIGARETTE SMOKING AMONG SEXUAL MINORITY ADULTS: WHY SUBGROUP DATA MATTER]

Cigarette smoking remains a major public health concern in the U.S. Previous research has found higher smoking rates among s*xual minority adults than among heteros*xual adults. However, less was known about how this burden differed among specific subgroups, including le***an women, gay men, bis*xual women, and bis*xual men.

In this systematic review and meta-analysis, our team examined current cigarette smoking across adult subgroups defined by s*x and s*xual identity.

We searched four research databases for U.S.-based studies published between 2007 and 2020. After screening 3,306 records, we included 30 studies representing more than 1.4 million participants.

The pooled prevalence estimates for current cigarette smoking were:

37.7% among bis*xual women
31.7% among le***an women
30.5% among gay men
30.1% among bis*xual men
21.0% among heteros*xual men
16.6% among heteros*xual women

Bis*xual women had the highest estimated prevalence - more than twice that of heteros*xual women.

These findings suggest that disparities in cigarette smoking remained pronounced in studies published from 2007 to 2020, with prevalence estimates similar to those reported in an earlier review covering 1987 to 2007. They also show why s*xual minority adults should not be treated as a single group: important differences can be hidden when subgroup data are combined.

More research is needed to understand the factors contributing to particularly high smoking rates among bis*xual women and to develop to***co prevention and cessation programs tailored to the needs of different communities.
