Today our flag football coach was unable to coach the game. Guess who stepped in to make sure the team was able to play? That would be Principal Brooks!
I would like to say that the team won because of my coaching but that was not the case. The NTA flag football team is unstoppable and they were well prepared due to Coach Bennett.
Fun times!

Today, our 6th grade students had the great privilege of of meeting and hearing from the Chief Judge of Cook County Circuit Court, Timothy Evans. This opportunity was a part of our Harambee Black History Month celebration. He shared his career journey, experiences and provided lots of inspiration for our students. He took the time to shake every student’s hand and asked about their career goals.
Thanks to Ms. Brown-Venning, 6th grade teacher, for this amazing series of speakers allowing our students to see possibilities of who and what they can become. Last week they heard from a two Black architects and next week they will hear from Tic Toc superstar, Dilla!

The GoCPS High School results are in!
As many of you know, the CPS High School application process begins in 7th grade. The process looks at 2 pieces of data - 7th grade cumulative grades in reading, math, science and social science and scores in reading and math on the High School Admissions Test (HSAT), which students take in October of 8th grade.
Last year, we made a huge push to get 7th graders to be more aware of how their grades will impact their future high school choices. We have continued this work this year through the Success Bound lessons that take place in 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes each week. Students do a “gradebook audit” every 4-5 weeks, to analyze their grades, request make-ups or retakes (if eligible) and to create a plan through goal setting to make sure their grades are where they need them to be to get into their #1 school of choice.
We prioritize finding schools that will be a “best fit” for each student, so that does not always mean a selective enrollment school. Students do research on extracurricular activities, distance needed to travel, specific programming and much more. We are pleased to announce that 24 of our 8th grade students were offered seats at their #1 school of choice! 18 of our students were offered seats at their #2 school of choice. Many students are currently waitlisted for their top schools, with great potential for getting in once the waitlist window opens on April 1st. We are so excited for the Class of 2024!!
Best,
Mrs. Feltes

Linda Venning-Baldwin, former Chicago Nurse and Historian, came in to share an in depth conversation on Power, Privilege and Oppression related to the progress towards equality through the Civil Rights Movement and the significance of MLK Jr. and the Dream.
Thanks to Mrs. Brown-Venning for arranging this awesome opportunity for our 5th and 6th graders.

On Friday, December 29, 2023, NTA lost a key member of our community. Tricia “Trish” Jensen had battled cancer for the past several years. She courageously fought, always putting on a brave face, and never letting it slow her down. Trish has been a part of NTA for over 15 years. She was a devoted mom, friend, community member as well as employee at NTA.
Over the past two years, Tricia worked in our Young Readers Library. She organized books, read stories to children and assisted with the littles checking books in and out.
Tricia attended every event that NTA held, whether she was supporting her younger two children, Heirlynn and Prince, or volunteering as a community member.
Tricia’s two older daughters, Shayla and Jael, are not only graduates of NTA, but now amazing staff members. One of Tricia’s proudest moments this year was witnessing both Shayla and Jael on the first day of school with their students.
Tricia will be truly missed by all.
