It’s hard to believe that in some parts of the country (and the world!), back-to-school season is already here!

For students with endocrine conditions, a safe and successful school year takes a team: pediatric endocrine nurses and APPs, school nurses, teachers, and families working together.

As the new school year begins, let’s make sure care plans are current, emergency procedures are clear, and everyone knows their role. And to the endocrine teams and school nurses heading into a busy season: thank you for all you do!

Summer often means routine changes: travel, camps, sports, and time away from usual care settings ☀️

For children and families living with CAH or adrenal insufficiency, this is when emergency preparedness matters most.

We created a simple emergency hydrocortisone kit checklist to support families and caregivers in staying prepared wherever summer takes them.

A few additional clinical tips shared by pediatric endocrine nursing experts:
🟣 Many families benefit from having multiple kits (home, school, car, travel bag, etc.), since needs can vary by setting
🟣 Emergency medications should be kept in their original packaging with prescription labels visible
🟣 It's important to ensure that instructions are clear enough for someone without medical training to follow in an emergency
🟣 Families should confirm with their pharmacy that they are receiving the correct formulation (and all necessary supplies, including diluent if needed)
🟣 Local EMS protocols can vary significantly, so understanding local emergency response procedures is an important part of preparedness

Pediatric endocrine nurses play a critical role in making this level of preparedness possible by translating complex care into clear, actionable plans families can rely on.

For years, clinicians and patients have pointed out the same issue with the term “PCOS”:

Not everyone with the condition develops ovarian cysts.
Now, after one of the largest global engagement efforts ever conducted for a medical condition renaming initiative, Polycystic O***y Syndrome is officially becoming Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

And the change reflects something much bigger than terminology.
It reflects a broader shift in healthcare toward:
• more accurate clinical understanding
• whole-person care
• reduced stigma
• and earlier recognition of complex endocrine and metabolic conditions

More than 22,000 people worldwide contributed to the process alongside healthcare professionals, patient organizations, and medical societies.

For specialty clinicians, moments like this are an important reminder:
Healthcare is constantly evolving.

Happy International Nurses Day to the most dedicated, most quietly remarkable nurses, our fellow pediatric endocrinology nurses. 💙

We work in a world most people don't fully understand. We track numbers that determine how a child grows, develops, and feels in their own body. We explain a Type 1 diagnosis to a terrified 7-year-old in a way that actually makes sense. We remember that our patient hates finger pokes on their left hand. We hold the space between a scary diagnosis and a full, beautiful life.

Our specialty can sometimes feel isolating — small teams, complex patients, a whole lot of problem-solving in between. That's exactly why PENS exists: so none of us have to figure it out alone.

What do therapy dogs have to do with endocrine care? 🐶

Quite a lot, it turns out.

One of the highlights of PENS 2026 was Jennifer Pfieffer, APRN, PCNS-BC, ESMHL of Nemours Children's Health, who shared thoughtful, practical insights on transition care for youth with diabetes.

Her session explored how animal-assisted interventions can help reduce stress, build confidence, and create meaningful connections with patients and families.

A few furry friends certainly helped make this session unforgettable. 🐾
