“Dear CPS Staff,

We have been carefully monitoring the forecast over the past 24 hours, and have determined that given frigid temperatures predicted for tomorrow, and a Wind Chill Warning from the National Weather Service that wind chills could reach -30 degrees, it will be unsafe for staff and students to travel to school. Therefore, we are canceling all classes for Tuesday, January 16. All after-school programming, including athletic practices and games, are also canceled for Tuesday.

Canceling classes is always a last resort, which is why CPS has been working closely with the Office of Emergency Management (OEMC) and other city agencies, and why we have relied on information from the National Weather Service to help guide our decision. Factors that went into making this decision include:
Air temperature and wind chill
The amount of snow and ice on the ground
The ability of students and staff to get to school and work safely
The accessibility of buildings and roads
The ability to transport students safely on buses
Potential issues with heating systems or power outages
The safety risks to our employees, especially those who work outside (crossing guards, Safe Passage Workers, etc.)

The forecast shows temperatures warming by Wednesday, so we expect that classes will resume for all students on January 17.

All CPS facilities will be closed tomorrow, including Central and Network Offices. There will be no remote learning for students on Tuesday, January 16.

52-week employees who can work remotely, including school leaders, central and network office staff, and school based employees have the option of working remotely or using a benefit day on Tuesday.

Some CPS employees who are responsible for the operations of our school buildings, including engineers and custodians may need to report to work in person on Tuesday, January 16 to prepare for the return of staff and students on Wednesday. These employees will hear from their managers directly if they need to report to work in person.

All other school-based employees, including non-52 week employees, and 52-week employees who cannot perform their job duties remotely, including security officers and nutrition workers, should not report to the school building.

Here are some tips to help everyone stay warm during these very cold days:
Stay inside and limit unnecessary trips outdoors
Wear several layers of loose, warm clothing
Pay special attention to keeping your hands, head, ears, and feet warm and dry

Chicago is also operating several warming centers that can be accessed throughout the winter months. Click here for complete details on these centers, or call 3-1-1 for information on where you can take shelter from the cold.

Dear CPS Staff and Families,

After closely monitoring the forecast and consulting with various city agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management (OEMC), we have decided to cancel and reschedule all events scheduled to be held in our buildings tomorrow, Monday, January 15 (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day). As a reminder, classes are not in session on Monday in observance of the holiday. Note: GoCPS testing at Illinois Institute of Technology will continue as scheduled tomorrow, as it is being held in a non CPS building. Families who registered for the test have received additional information.

We have not yet made a decision about if schools will be open on Tuesday, January 16, but we are watching the weather closely and continuing to work with our city partners, including the OEMC. CPS will communicate with staff and families as soon as possible on Monday regarding classes being in session on Tuesday.

“Dear CPS Staff and Families,

With winds and snow increasing this afternoon, CPS is canceling after-school and out-of-school activities for both Friday, January 12 and Saturday, January 13. This includes all athletic practices and games, and all District-run and District-sponsored after-school clubs and activities, including after-care. One exception: GoCPS testing at the Illinois Institute of Technology will proceed as scheduled this weekend.

We know that several schools have activities planned for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday on Monday, January 15. However, since extreme cold is being predicted for both Monday and Tuesday of next week, CPS will continue monitoring the weather and will make a decision on both Monday’s events and schools being open on Tuesday as early as possible this weekend.

We will communicate that decision directly to staff and families as soon as it is final via email, text, and robocall. CPS will also notify the local media and post on social media, as well as on our website at cps.edu.

Again, all District-run and District-sponsored activities are canceled for both Friday and Saturday, January 12 and 13, due to inclement weather. We will contact all staff and families as early as possible this weekend with a final decision on if Martin Luther King Day events on Monday, January 15 and classes on Tuesday, January 16 will move forward.

We know that along with education, our students rely on their schools to provide meals and a safe, warm environment. Therefore, CPS will do everything possible to keep classes in session, as long as it is safe for students and staff. Here are the factors that go into making that decision:

To make things as comfortable as possible for students and staff, our building engineers, custodians, and other facilities staff will continue working diligently to make sure that schools are warm, safe, and dry. Schools will also implement their protocols for inclement weather, including limiting the time students spend outdoors at recess.

Here are a few additional tips to help you stay warm as temperatures drop:

An agreement has been reached between CTU and CPS.

"Dear Families,
I am excited to share the news that CPS and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) have
reached an agreement to bring staff and students back into schools for in-person
learning. All staff will be reporting to schools tomorrow, Tuesday, January 11, and
in-person classes will resume for all PS students on Wednesday, January 12.
Please do not plan to send your children to school tomorrow - Tuesday, January 11
unless your principal has confirmed that in-person activities will take place. We will
share more information on the agreement soon.
In addition to children returning to school on Wednesday, the following services will also
be available:
Food Service
Athletics
After-School Activities
Before and After-Care (for those schools that offer this service)
Transportation
COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination Events
As always, students should not come to school if they are not feeling well or are showing
any symptoms of COVID-19. And those children who are still in quarantine due to testing
positive or being a close contact should not return to school until their quarantine time
is complete.
We are profoundly grateful for your patience and partnership throughout this
challenging time and look forward to welcoming all of your children safely back to class
on Wednesday, January 12. Our goal moving forward will be to focus all of our attention
on providing students with the rigorous, high-quality education they deserve while
