Are you 60 years or older and are interested in trying a medication that may help with depression treatment? If so, please read below!

Dr. Olusola Ajilore at the University of Illinois Chicago is examining if clemastine, an antihistamine, can improve connections in the brain and improve depression symptoms in older adults, and whether this improvement can make antidepressant treatment work better, reduce depressive symptoms, and improve memory and thinking.

You may be eligible if you:
Are 60 years old or older
Are currently depressed
Have no other mental health problems other than anxiety
Not currently on antidepressants
Can have MRI scans and an electrocardiogram (ECG) at the UIC CRC and MRI Center on the Medical District Campus

The CLIMB Study Includes:

Random assignment of antidepressant treatment and the drug, clemastine, or antidepressant treatment and placebo
6 visits over 12 weeks
2 MRI visits, 1 in-person clinic visit, 3 virtual visits (zoom or telephone)
Assessment of mood, memory, and thinking abilities
Compensation for your participation

Volunteers who have recently achieved remission from depression can help with a research study that is examining why depression returns or how we can best predict who is at highest risk of depression returning.

The study is conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It involves coming to UIC for 5-8 visits and 6-9 telephone calls over 2 years and includes: a clinical interview, memory testing, brain scans, and at home assessments.
Individuals age 60 or above may be eligible if they have had their depression improve with recent treatment, have no other mental health problems, and are able to have an MRI scan.
Participants will be reimbursed up to $1000 for their time.

Volunteers who are struggling with depression can help with a research study that is examining why depression returns or how we can best predict who is at highest risk of depression returning.

The study is conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It involves coming to UIC for 2-5 visits and over approximately 8-20 weeks and includes: clinical interviews and a standardized depression treatment plan using FDA approved antidepressant medications. If your depression responds to treatment, you will then enter a second study phase. Participation in this second phase lasts for two years and involves 5-8 visits to UIC, 6-9 phone calls, brain MRIs, memory testing, and at home assessments.

Individuals age 60 or above may be eligible if they are currently struggling with depression, have no other mental health problems, and are able to have an MRI scan.
Participants will be reimbursed up to $160 for their time spent in the first part of the study. Participants who enter the second phase will receive up to $1000 for completing the study.

Adults Aged 60 Years or Older Needed for Study at The University of Illinois Chicago
Volunteers can help with a research study at The University of Illinois Chicago that is examining why depression returns or how we can best predict who is at highest risk of depression returning.
The study is looking for 3 types of volunteers:
• People currently experiencing symptoms of depression
• People who have been successfully treated for depression within the past 3 months
• People with no lifetime history of depression
You may be eligible if you:
• Are age 60 years or above
• have no other mental health problems (currently depressed individuals may have anxiety)
• are able to have MRI scans
Currently Depressed participants will partake in 2-5 online or in-person visits at The University of Illinois Chicago over approximately 8-20 weeks. Participation includes clinical interviews and a standardize depression treatment plan using FDA approved antidepressant medications.
Remitted Depressed and Never Depressed participants will join a second study phase which lasts for 2 years and involves 5-8 online or in-person visits at The University of Illinois Chicago, 6-9 phone calls, brain MRIs, memory testing, and at home assessments.
Participants will be reimbursed up to $160 for their time spent in the first phase of the study and up to $1016 for completing the second phase of the study.
