Typically I call Thursday Today, far more importantly, it is Maundy Thursday.⁣

In honor of this day, I’d like to share a book I’ve had for more than 25 years, and which only continues to become more precious to me.⁣

My children’s Bible.⁣

Friends, I have never once found a children’s Bible which can equal this one. Most are filled with cartoons, only tell the “nice” stories, or even try to turn hard, gritty stories into “nice” ones. ⁣

This book made the Scriptures REAL to me, even as a small child. The illustrations are beautiful and lifelike. It never shied away from pain, sadness, and darkness. It never lied to children, or insulted their intelligence, yet worded everything simply and elegantly for a child to grasp. It is the most faithful rendering of Scripture for a child I have ever found, and it blesses me to this day. ⁣

Have a blessed Maundy Thursday.⁣

Love this annotated version of The Hobbit. If you know me, thou, I love having annotated versions of most literature. It brings so much richness to the surface and makes connections I had missed.
⁣⁣
⁣⁣Twentieth century literature as a rule is a downer. Don’t get me wrong: I love Fitzgerald and Steinbeck, and I can appreciate Hemingway and Orwell and do on. But their books leave you needing to find something hopeful, in the same way you feel the need for a refreshing shower after you’ve been sick and grubby in bed for a week.
⁣⁣
⁣⁣That’s why we love Tolkien. He lived through the horrors of WWI, and we see the influence it had on his books. (Read some of his descriptions of Mordor again, and they sound an awful lot like fields of trenches.) Tolkien, however, came to different conclusions about the meaning of it all, and has inspired hope in readers ever since. Just the refreshing literature we needed.

In the last couple weeks, I’ve been amazed by the number of people who have told me they have never seen the 1959 Ben-Hur. If you’re in that club, you’ll get a great opportunity to change that this week.
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣This Sunday (Palm Sunday), and the following Wednesday (a week from today), will be showing this classic on the big screen at select movie theaters, in honor of the movie’s 60th anniversary. Go their website to find the theater closest to you.
⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣Ben-Hur is one of my favorite movies of all time, and it may be the greatest cinematic epic ever filmed. The cinematography is gorgeous, the effects stand up well even today, and the acting of Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd propels the story with electric energy.

⁣⁣⁣You need to see Ben-Hur at least once in your life. I watch it every year around Easter. It’s a great film, and an edifying story to help prepare the heart for Holy Week.0

I love the Art Institute of Chicago. There are so many incredibly famous works of art housed here, that need to be seen in life and not just in books to be truly appreciated. It is such a delightful and memorable learning opportunity. Don’t miss it if you’re in Chicago!⁣

So delighted that this fall finds me back in Boston again, this time at the home of the one and only John Adams. @ Peacefield

I’ve been on a hiatus from Instagram the past couple months to finish up my FINAL SEMESTER OF GRAD SCHOOL. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Time has flown by, and it has been a curious feeling for a teacher to become a student again, but so worth it. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Just a couple months, a few papers, and... more than a few... tests left. Can’t wait to return to building my business, and see what the future holds for Miss Emily’s Schoolroom.⁣
