James Wines will deliver a lecture, "Arch-Art - Conduit to Context," on Wednesday September 13 at 6pm in S. R. Crown Hall.
James Wines is an architect and artist, and President and founder of SITE, an architecture and environmental arts studio. SITE is internationally recognized for innovative buildings, public spaces, parks, interiors and product designs.
Wines is the winner of twenty-five art and architecture awards – including the 2013 National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement, 2011 ANCE International Architect Award (Italy) and 1995 Chrysler Award for Design Innovation. His projects for SITE have been the subject of twenty-one monographic books and honored by five retrospective exhibitions in the USA, Europe and Japan. His drawings are in the collections of thirty-five museums, including the Museum of Modern Art NY, Victoria & Albert Museum London and Centre Pompidou Paris. IIT Architecture will host a Panel Discussion on Landscape Architecture, co-moderated by Professor and Director of the Landscape Architecture + Urbanism program Ron Henderson at S. R. Crown Hall on Monday, September 11 at 6 p.m.
Landscape architects are leading the transformation of Chicago’s public realm with innovative projects that meld design, ecology, history, and culture, from Millennium Park to Navy Pier, the 606 and the Riverwalk.
Charles A. Birnbaum, FASLA, President & CEO of The Cultural Landscape Foundation, and Ron Henderson, FASLA, Director of the Landscape Architecture + Urbanism Program at Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture, will co-moderate a panel discussion on innovative and entrepreneurial projects that are reshaping 21st century Chicago and the practice of landscape architecture. They will be joined by Conor O’Shea, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and founding principal of Hinterlands Urbanism and Landscape; Terry Guen, FASLA, Terry Guen Design Associates, and Bradley McCauley, ASLA, Managing Principal, Site Design, Chicago. MLA Director Professor Ron Henderson contributes his sketchbook to the Cultural Landscape Foundation silent auction to be held in Chicago during the ASLA annual meeting on November 7th and 8th.
According to the Cultural Landscape Foundation website:
"TCLF's 11th annual silent auction of artwork by award-winning landscape designers, artists, photographers, and allied professionals is always a highlight of the ASLA annual meeting and EXPO. This year, it will be located in Booth 646 of the EXPO, to be held at McCormick Place Lakeside Center, Nov. 7-8. Proceeds benefit the Pioneers of American Landscape Design Oral History Project.
In 2003, TCLF launched the Pioneers of American Landscape Design initiative in partnership with the ASLA, with the goal of documenting, collecting, and preserving the unique, first-hand perspectives of renowned landscape practitioners."

Hinterlands Urbanism and Landscape, the firm of IIT MLA faculty member Conor O'Shea, is featured in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial. The project, "Logistical Ecologies," is part of the exhibition BOLD: Alternative Scenarios for Chicago and is on display at the Chicago Cultural Center from October 3 - January 3.

PRESS: Heidi Petersen (MLA '15) has published an article, "In Chicago, New Parks are Civic Infrastructure," in ASLA's blog, The Dirt.
In the blog posting, Petersen discusses a panel led by IIT Architecture faculty member Marshall Brown at the ASLA 2015 Annual Meeting in Chicago. The panel used Daniel Burnham's urban plan as a starting point to review three new works of “civic infrastructure,” and included presentations by Sarah Astheimer, ASLA, James Corner Field Operations; Matthew Bird, ASLA, Michael Van Valkenburg Associates (MVVA); and Gina Ford, ASLA, Sasaki Associates.
