If your dog EVER approaches another dog, or a human, or pulls toward them while leashed, your dog has no business being off leash. Period.

The click is not the trick: the efficacy of clickers and other reinforcement methods in training naïve dogs to perform new tasks
Background A handheld metal noisemaker known as a “clicker” is widely used to train new behaviors in dogs; however, evidence for their superior efficacy compared to providing solely primary reinforcement or other secondary reinforcers in the acquisition of novel behavior in dogs is largely anecd...

Four Fabulous Ways to Get Bitten by a Dog
Dog bites can be scary and painful, and can cause major damage. No one in their right mind wants to be bitten! But as a canine behavior specialist who also observes human behavior, I’ve seen people who, unfortunately, seem to be in pursuit of that goal. And so, if you’re in the market for sporti...

"I believe a high percentage of dogs need to be sterilized, but at the same time, we should be thinking about which dogs a community wants to have puppies from, and preserving a population of healthy 'American Mutts'," she said. "It's more complex than having a one-size-fits-all policy."
If we don't make some changes you are not going to be able to find a behaviorally, physically healthy pet dog.

COVID-19 has changed the way we live, at least for now. I have no idea what Halloween will look like this year, whether we will see trick or treaters or not, but since today is the first day of autumn, and Halloween is just around the corner, I thought I'd post my Halloween handout.
Halloween, like all holidays, was never intended for dogs. Halloween is a social activity for humans. I know you know this, but it is tempting to included the dog, isn't it.
Dogs and puppies, should be left at home when your children go trick or treating, and kept away from the door when the little ghosties come to your house for candy.
It is not that I am the grim reaper, there are safety concerns involved:
1) Costumes can be frightening to a puppy or a dog. Frightened animals are more likely to bite.
2) Squealing children and flowing costume parts can be very attractive targets for dogs and puppies. The risk for jumping up and/or nipping is increased. This behavior can not only frighten a child, but it can cause an injury.
3) The risk that a dog or puppy gets into candy and becomes sick, sometimes gravely, increases.
4) Puppies should not be dressed in costumes. There are may be potentially dangerous pieces and parts for a puppy to chew and ingest.
5) Dogs and puppies can escape through the door while you are distributing candy to your ghoulish visitors.
It is always best to err on the side of caution. Enjoy your Halloween.
Booooo! Trick or Treat!

While we are under the shelter in place order I will not be seeing clients in their homes, or here, but I can offer other services. I can offer video lessons for puppies and beginners. For current clients I can offer outdoor private lessons. For those of you whose dogs are exhibiting problem behaviors you'd like to address I can offer video consultations. And of course, as always, I can help you via email or a phone conversation. So if you need help, don't hesitate to ask.
