What a great discussion and art exhibit with Lillian Young Art at DePaul University. The artwork of Lillian Young, "Wanted: Runaways" and "The Black Elder Archives", was the centerpiece of the panel discussion "The Problem with Archives" hosted by IBPE and DePaul Humanities Center. The discussion included the difficulty to find historical archive documentation in all public archive institutions (museums, libraries, education) for people of color, genders other than white males and the economically marginalized. Panelists also spoke about the work they are doing to provide inclusion of all people in archives through intergenerational teaching, portraiture and more. Panelists along with Lillian Young were Marcy Dinius, Professor of English, and Laura Kina, Professor and Vincent de Paul Professor, The Art School, with moderator Symone Johnson, Assistant Professor of African and Black Diaspora Studies. Lillian Young is also the Family Programs Director at the Brooklyn Museum.

The countdown begins! Don't miss "The Problem with Archives: Art, Race, Agency, & Memory" on February 27th, presented by the DHC and IBPE.

Engage with a distinguished panel including Lillian Young, whose evocative artwork in series such as "Wanted: Runaways" and "The Black Elders Archive" challenge our perceptions of historical archiving.

Don't miss this opportunity to reconsider the archives and discover how art intersects with race, memory, and agency to shape our understanding of history.

Happy National Day!

Fun facts from National Day Calendar:

The November 8th date is a play on words for the same as that super-secret organization, NOV8, making it the perfect date to inspire innovation!

Why is S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. so important?

S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. is all around us and shapes our everyday experiences

The U.S. Labor Department's predicted 10 fastest growing occupations are nearly all S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. careers; therefore an interest in S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. early on can lead to success later on in life

The U.S. has fallen behind other nations in science and math education; we need to motivate young kids to pursue these subjects to keep up with the rest of the world

We must close the gender gap that exists in S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. related-careers. Building interest in S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. careers for girls is critical to their future earning potential
