Earth Month 2026: Events this Week (Apr 6-10)
Spring is officially in bloom here at Roosevelt University, and you know what that means: it's the return of Earth Month here in 2026. The earth is not getting much love these days (to put it mildly), so there's never been a more critical time to reconnect with the natural world, learn more about environmentally-friendly practices (like composting or seed-bombing or just not buying stuff in general), and build a more sustainable community upon a foundation of environmental justice and stewardship....

Today 2/2/26 is World Wetlands Day! Since 2010, students in Roosevelt University's Sustainability Studies program have explored many different wetlands in Chicago and its suburbs. There are many to choose from, given that Chicago was basically built on top of wetlands. Here in IL, 90% of pre-European settlement wetlands have been destroyed due to development and agriculture; yet, 40% of IL's endangered species spend at least some of the year living in wetlands.
Here's a photo of Prof. Mike Bryson's SUST 220 Water class on a a field trip to Palmisano Park on the SW Side of Chicago. Behind the students is a huge, terraced wetland that was restored on land that was once a limestone quarry and then a landfill. The wetland provides incredibly diverse habitat for birds, insects, and other creatures while also filtering stormwater runoff.
