Our panelists for the upcoming September 17th virtual event include Jane Beachy, Aaron Cohen, Dr. Tyron Cooper and Mike Reed.
Jane Beachy, Artistic Director of Illinois Humanities and the founder and Director of Salonathon, "a home for underground, emerging, and genre-defying art". Jane has taught curatorial practice in the Theater and Performance Studies Department at the University of Chicago, as well as through workshops at Yale University and Beloit College.
Aaron Cohen, Professor and Author. His recent book, ' Move on Up: Chicago Soul Music and Black Cultural Power', looks at the social and musical changes that shaped R&B in Chicago during the 1960's and 1970's.
Dr. Tyron Cooper, a four-time Emmy award winning composer/ performer and Director of Indiana University's Archives of African American Music and Culture. He also serves on the faculty of IU as associate professor in the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies, and adjunct associate professor in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology.
Mike Reed is a musician, composer, bandleader and arts presenter based in Chicago. Over the last two decades he has emerged as a dominant force within Chicago's diverse artistic community. He is the founding director of the Pitchfork Music Festival, the current programming chair of the Chicago Jazz Festival, and the owner and director of the acclaimed performing arts venue Constellation. He is the owner of the Hungry Brain, a cozy neighborhood tavern that has been a fulcrum for live creative music and socially-driven public programs. He is also the author of the recently released book, 'The City Was Yellow: Chicago Jazz and Improvised Music 1980-2010'.

Kyle is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Music Theory at IU Jacobs School of Music. Kyle holds a Ph.D. from the City University of NY, where his dissertation explored chromaticism in pre-tonal music. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in piano from Mannes College of Music. In addition to his research and teaching, Kyle continues to work as an accompanist, primarily for singers and brass instrumentalists.
