At Illinois Tech, we’re taking a proactive approach to that transformation by rethinking how academic disciplines come together and how students prepare for the workforce. Our new academic structure brings together three interdisciplinary colleges: Tech Futures, Design Futures, and Professional Futures.

This model is designed to strengthen connections between disciplines, expand experiential learning, and align education more closely with the skills and capabilities employers need. By bringing fields together, students can explore intersections that reflect the realities of today’s workforce, from engineering and health to design, technology, and society.

Today, Illinois Tech announced $76 million in recent philanthropic commitments to invest in students and advance the university’s student-first academic transformation.

Led by a landmark $25 million commitment from University Regent Craig Duchossois and his wife, Janet, the collective support of alumni, trustees, foundations, and corporations will strengthen scholarships, experiential learning, cutting-edge research, and industry-connected programs.

This investment comes as Illinois Tech launches a new three-college academic model built around the technologies, industries, and careers shaping the future. The model is designed to make it easier for students to connect disciplines, pursue hands-on learning, engage with industry, and develop the adaptability needed to navigate a rapidly changing world.

Chicago’s tech ecosystem became the launchpad for Otioh Konan’s (AI 3rd Year) journey into artificial intelligence.

Through student organizations, interdisciplinary projects, and hands-on coursework at Illinois Tech, Otioh is building the skills to develop technology with real-world impact. From creating an AI robotics assistant to designing ProFeed, a student-professor feedback web app, she is combining front-end development, ethical AI, and innovation to shape solutions centered around people.

“Being at Illinois Tech has given me the opportunity to explore both the technical and human sides of computing through hands-on projects, collaboration, and involvement in student organizations,” she says.

“Design is something you learn by doing.”

For Angie Conwell (B.ARCH. 4th Year), that means building models, creating hand drawings, visiting project sites, and gaining real-world experience through internships. After working with both architecture and interior design teams, as well as an engineering and architecture firm, Angie has gained valuable insight into multiple sides of the industry while developing the skills to bring ideas to life.
