The American Council on Germany (ACG), the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), and the German Studies Association (GSA) are working together to jointly promote the value of the German-American partnership and reach a wider collective audience.
On September 16, we are pleased to speak with the German Government's Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation: Metin Hakverdi.
Our new virtual series titled âGerman Politics Today: Meet a Bundestag Memberâ will consist of three ACG-moderated discussions, in German, with members of the German Bundestag on issues ranging from the transatlantic relationship and German reunification to citizen engagement. The goal of the series is to engage younger Americans enrolled in German language programs and other German studies students, to inform them about current issues in Germany, and to give them an opportunity to utilize their German listening, writing, and speaking skills as part of their German language courses in high school and college.
Part 1: Transatlantic Partnership with Metin Hakverdi
The transatlantic partnership is a key pillar of Germanyâs foreign policy. The United States and Canada are Germanyâs closest allies outside Europe. Large areas of common interests, shared challenges and fundamental values form a bond between our democracies on both sides of the Atlantic. How close transatlantic relations are is clear also from the multitude of societal and cultural contacts between Germany and the United States and Germany and Canada. Promoting these ties in the long term is the task of the Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation. Metin Hakverdi assumed office as the new Coordinator on 28 May 2025.
The office of Coordinator of German-American Cooperation was created as far back as 1981; it was later renamed and expanded to comprise cooperation with Canada. Germanyâs Coordinators have included former Minister of State Hildegard Hamm-BrĂŒcher; political scientist Prof. Werner Weidenfeld, currently at LMU Munich; Member of the Bundestag Peter Beyer and, most recently, Member of the Bundestag Michael Link.
To learn more about the webinar series and to register for Part 1 on Transatlantic Partnership, click the registration button below! Please share this webinar with any students, colleagues, or friends who may be interested in attending. The webinar will be conducted fully in German.

The German federal parliamentâs International Parliamentary Scholarship (IPS) program, offering young college graduates from over 50 countries the chance to experience Germanyâs democratic system of governance up-close in Berlin, is set to continue for its 40th year in 2026. The application deadline is July 31, 2025.
IPS is the German Bundestagâs long-term political investment aimed at consolidating partnership-based cooperation between Germany and the participating countries.
Offered in collaboration with Berlinâs three major universities, the prestigious IPS program is ideal for politically engaged young people who seek to play an important role in shaping the future of democratic cooperationâin their respective countries, and internationally.
The IPS program allows participants to gain first-hand knowledge of Germanyâs parliamentary system and political decision-making process during a three-month work placement with a Member of the German Parliament. Participants also take part in a rich educational program with the German political foundations and have the chance to enroll in university classes, spending a total of five months in the German capital (March 1 through July 31, 2026).
IPS is open to college graduates who are U.S. citizens, under 30 on March 1, 2026, and have very good knowledge (B2+) of the German language. Candidates should also be familiar with the basic features of German politics and society. Applicants must have completed their undergraduate studies and be able to offer proof of their degree by December 31, 2025.
Please tell your students, colleagues, and any other prospective candidates about the International Parliamentary Scholarship. Further information on the programâs requirements can be found at www.germany.info/ips, where questions can be submitted via the contact form, and on the Bundestag website www.bundestag.de/ips, which also includes the application materials.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time with any questions on the IPS program.
Thank you very much for your interest.
