It’s not easy being an advocate for victims or for truth. I recently received another hateful private message regarding my stance on Bethel, and this time, I decided to share it publicly. Because it’s a pattern I’m seeing that is dangerous to the body of Christ. It’s more than calling for accountability; it's about silencing anyone who disagrees and labeling it as self-promoting-sin.

If you’re wondering, this is your sign to hold them (church leaders) accountable or leave. You are not subject to their authority. They are the servants who Jesus instructed to take care of the sheep-you. Clarity is care. Communication is compassion.

This is an example of the kind of messages I get for being an advocate for those abused by other Christians or speaking up about abuse and cover-up in the Church.

I've never publicly said this: I've lost friends over this topic.

And I'm okay with that.

Truth comes at a cost.

Jesus wasn't liked by the religious (or everyone).

I strive to be loving regardless of who is in pain. Meaning, I pray for the abusers, their innocent families, the victims, and the advocates. It's not an easy process.

I've been accused of being the accuser of the brethren, unloving, not forgiving, and quoted a bunch of Bible verses about why I've been wrong for speaking out. When I say that the organization that has failed needs to do better and here is how ... or the path they are taking isn't the way to healing the body but protecting the wolves...people who have made those leaders an idol come out. The truth is -- sometimes leaders cover up for self-preservation, and those not in the field don't see it. Oftentimes, the church itself doesn't know they are doing it wrong. That is why mercy and grace matter, but so does logic and expert advice.

I find it interesting that I barely spoke out about Bethel. I have been blessed by that ministry in life-changing ways. I was a part of the leaders network for years. Some who are reading this know that I love them. But I did advocate for them to do things differently, or else there would be consequences. Not because I wished it upon them, but because that is how I've seen God move in the past.

So when this comment says, "your efforts to take down Bethel have been successful," I'm grieved. It's sad that this person thought that was the goal. When in fact, we are the ones protecting the sheep. And of course I don't celebrate people losing their jobs. I'm sure my one little call for accountability (about Shawn Bolz) didn't make that happen. The real accountability for people losing their jobs is those who covered up the abuse. Leaders have the responsibility for what God entrusted to them, and the consequences for their actions. No one else.

I'm okay. I've learned not to take it personally and to leave the deal to God.

And if you think about it -- pray for me and my ministry. It's not for the faint of heart. May God purify His church and be glorified.

This is a repost from my blog published about 10 years ago. It seems appropriate for those who are going through deconstruction about things they were told by the Church but didn’t understand. Especially regarding being single, divorced, or remarried. I believed a lie that kept me from dating because I was afraid I’d offend God. I share more in today’s Substack post.
