Susan Levine 10/27/2022

When University of Chicago Psychology and Comparative Human Development professor Susan Levine and her team wanted to examine how working with undergraduate tutors might benefit local second graders’ math development, UChicago’s Neighborhood Schools Program (NSP)—which has placed UChicago students as tutors and aides in Chicago classrooms for nearly 50 years—was the perfect partner.

Mathematics, Levine says, represents a fundamental domain of human thinking and math learning is connected to positive long-term outcomes including high school graduation, earnings, and even health. Working with NSP to design a program that aims to meets young children at a variety of starting points was critical, particularly when many children have lost learning opportunities due to COVID-19.

Mellodie Brown, principal at Beethoven Elementary School in Bronzeville, says UChicago students who come to the school as part of the Neighborhood Schools Program at the University of Chicago (NSP) have not only helped increase her students' grades and attendance, but have also helped them get comfortable asking for help.

“I think building a trusting relationship with an additional adult [like the NSP tutors] allows them to be more open and just say, ‘you know what, I don’t understand that, can you explain it to me or show me how to do it?’” says Brown. Check out more about Brown and how NSP provides direct education and enrichment to local pre-k to 12th grade students here: https://bit.ly/3g7vKUM.
