UChiArch is excited to announce that we are planning to put together a UChiArch Zine to showcase student work and exhibit our efforts from the 2020-2021 school year!

If you have any work you would like to contribute to the Zine (artwork, photography, writing, anything!), please send it to [email protected]. We are hoping to compile this project and distribute it by the end of the school year to celebrate the end of Spring Quarter!

Guidelines:
• The work you submit can be any type of media, whether it is 2D/3D art, sketches, writing, photos of buildings, etc. as long as it pertains to the built environment in some form we would love to include it!
• Please note your Name, Year, a short blurb of what the work you are submitting is (media, course taken, title…), and anything else you may want to add.
• There is no pressure at all if it isn’t finished or you feel like it’s ‘not good enough’. We are looking to highlight all kinds of work and just want to help put together a portfolio of student work to demonstrate how wonderful the architecture presence is on campus!
• Please submit in high quality resolution, PDF or jpeg is probably ideal!

Seriously, even if it’s a brief sketch, an iPhone snapshot of Harper, or some short musings, any and all submissions are appreciated!

We look forward to seeing your submissions, and please feel free to submit as many as you want! Spread the word to your friends :)

Hi everyone!!

Happy Spring Quarter and end of Week 3! We are excited to kick things off this quarter with a Greenhouse Design competition. We are presenting an opportunity to design a greenhouse and the winner could have their design actually be built on campus. This is presented in collaboration with the Chicago Parks District, and we encourage any and all UChicago students to submit sketches of your vision for the space above the Midway Ice Skating Rink.

Join us for a competition information session on April 22nd at 7pm Central Time, where you will be able to ask questions and find out more about this project. Zoom coordinates will be shared on social media the week of the event.

We hope to see you there next Thursday!! Please message us for more information!

Book Club 06/26/2020

In 2017, a group of architectural historians, art historians, architects, and urbanists began compiling a list of texts that discuss issues of race and space, which has been circulated more widely following the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Tony McDade and the subsequent protests for justice against police brutality and systemic racism.

Throughout this past quarter, we have been posting readings as part of an informal book club focusing on a different topic each week, and we felt we compelled to highlight some of the voices now speaking out against police brutality and systemic racism by diving into this lengthy list, pulling out a few texts that spoke to us as particularly relevant and interesting.

We hope that this list helps provide an approachable point of entry to a) this robust reading list; b) a broader practice of continuously learning about histories of race and racism; and c) ongoing action to make the practice of architecture, the built environment, and the systems in which both are embedded more inclusive, equitable, and anti-racist.

As UChicago’s architecture RSO, we wanted to make an explicit statement against racism and in support of Black Lives Matter movement.

We acknowledge that architecture is often complicit in racist power structures and employed to reinforce racist power structures. The discipline itself perpetuates systemic racism and inequality/inequity; the fact that 3% of licensed architects are Black and 0.3% are Black women is a testament to the severity of this issue which needs to be changed.

As a club, we hope to support and engage with students of all backgrounds and encourage all students to think critically about these issues. Most of all, we resolve to be compassionate and support our Black peers and neighbors.

Look out for future posts regarding continued dialogue and more resources.
