As a person who has overcome crippling social anxiety, these 8 lessons helped me conquer that beast and become a kick-ass confident speaker💪:
•
1. Immerse yourself in new places and experiences 🗺 Exposing yourself to new situations helps you to learn and grow, giving you confidence and comfort to speak.
•
2. Focus on connection, not perfection 🙏🏻 Only God is perfect. Why try for God’s perfection if you were meant to make mistakes? Focus on connecting with your listeners, not perfecting. Be your unique, flawed, beautiful, human self. This is what your listeners want to connect to, not perfection.
•
3. Get rid of toxic, critical people 😾They will only keep you down at their level. Surround yourself with people who are happy for your successes and want to see you flourish. Their support will help you feel confident!
•
4. Run for your life! 🏃♀️ I hate running. Even after completing a marathon! But the cardio sends more blood to my brain to help me think, it takes me to new places, and it kicks the anxiety out. By the end of the run, I feel like the most confident, baddest bitch in the world!
•
5. Talk to new people 🗣 Stop surrounding yourself with the same people. Put yourself in environments where no one knows you. You can be any person you want to be. See how well you flourish when you are not being pre-judged and safe to be yourself.
•
6. Make a lot of mistakes 🙊 Learn from them. Improve. Repeat. Even the best, most experienced speakers make many mistakes. When they do, they recover and keep going gracefully.
•
7. People don’t care! 😤 We live in a society where we are constantly worrying about what others think. At the end of the day, who are people really thinking about? THEMSELVES! So why waste your time? Care about those close to you, the rest can sod off!
•
8. Channel the nervousness 💫 Even professional speakers have anxiety. The difference is they figure out how to channel their anxiety into excitement and power in their speaking. Nervousness is simply our adrenaline flowing, a form of energy. Make the energy work for you. Channel your nervousness into enthusiasm and confidence!
