At HPDS, we help bright students with learning disabilities reach their full potential. HPDS has three campuses: Chicago: 6254 S.

We believe students who receive the appropriate intervention can develop the skills necessary to keep pace in traditional classrooms. Since January 2000, the full day school program has offered a specialized, educational curriculum for students, ages 6-15, with moderate to severe learning disabilities and who have average to above average intelligence. It might not feel like winter in Chicago today… but we’re still riding the Winter Carnival joy ❄️😎

This was the perfect way to head into break, and it’s been so good having our amazing students back at school this week.

Throughout December, Awvee Storey visited all three HPDS campuses to talk with our students about his experience as a dyslexic learner. Hearing from someone so accomplished who learns the way they do made a huge impact. Our kids felt seen, encouraged, and excited about what’s possible for them. Awvee reminded them that dyslexia is their superpower, and they took those words to heart.

We’re so grateful for the time and inspiration he shared with our community!

Meet the wonderful Ms. Bean! ✨

Now in her 10th year at HPDS, Ms. Bean teaches our 5th and 6th graders with so much care, energy, and heart. And as of this week, she’s officially a licensed Wilson® trainer- a huge accomplishment that reflects her dedication to helping students grow.

One of her favorite parts of teaching at HPDS is working in small groups, where she can really get to know each student and support their individual needs, and her favorite school tradition is the annual all-school basketball game.

Outside the classroom, you might find her rock climbing, swimming, or baking with her daughter. We’re so lucky to have her as part of our HPDS family, and we’re grateful for all the joy and expertise she brings to our community.

Dyslexia isn’t a single, uniform experience. The newly updated IDA definition recognizes dyslexia as a continuum, with severity, symptoms, and strengths that vary widely from student to student.

What many people think of as “dyslexia” is often just the tip of the iceberg - there’s a much fuller picture beneath the surface that shapes each child’s learning profile.

At HPDS, we support the whole learner by embracing their strengths, supporting their challenges, and providing the explicit, evidence-based instruction they need to thrive.

Halloween was a blast across all three HPDS campuses last Friday! 🎃

Students showed off their costumes and enjoyed haunted hallways, Halloween parades, and trick-or-treating. Even our teachers and staff joined in the fun with some incredible costumes of their own! The spooky spirit and smiles were everywhere!

Meet Ms. Turner, one of our incredible 2nd/3rd grade teachers! A proud University of Minnesota Twin Cities alum, she earned both her B.S. in Elementary Education Foundations and her M.Ed. in Elementary Education before bringing her talents to HPDS.

Now in her fourth year, Ms. Turner says her favorite part of working at HPDS is watching the moment when everything “clicks” and a student finds success with something that once felt challenging. She loves celebrating ALL accomplishments; big and small.💛

When she’s not in the classroom, you’ll find her outdoors or exploring new places!

We’re so lucky to have Ms. Turner on our team, our inspiring students every day!
