Housed in one of the only graduate-level, contemporary, live-art departments in the country, the Master of Fine Arts in Studio Performance program educates a new generation of artists who will continue to produce work that not only makes history, but makes a difference in the world. The Performance department at SAIC has a long history of producing artists who create highly experimental work that
responds to radically changing concepts of the body, time-based art, social practice, new media technologies, and the social and cultural conditions of a globally mobile society. Exceeding boundaries is at the heart of the Performance department ethos, and students are encouraged to explore diverse artistic disciplines and ideas in their performance research through performance re-enactments and re-dos, socially engaged/activist performance, abandoned practices, immersive technologies and social networking performance, environmental and site-specific performance, and choreographic actions. Interdisciplinary Explorations and Rigorous Critique
SAIC's interdisciplinary curriculum complements the fluid nature of performance by allowing students to study in other departments and engage with graduate advisors both within and beyond the Performance department as suits their individual practices. Rigorous approaches to assessment and critique are applied throughout the program, with an emphasis on structured dialogue and response. In the third semester, students present their thesis plans, with review by the Department Chair, Graduate Coordinator, and other Performance faculty to ascertain the degree to which they are developing as professional artists. Professional Practice Opportunities
Faculty nurture students as independent practitioners, and provide guidance and encouragement for showings and curatorial projects. Graduate students have the opportunity to share their work with wider audiences through public events such as the annual Fall New Blood Performance Festival and the Spring MFA Performance IMPACT Thesis Festival. Guest artists are regularly invited for symposia, workshops, and individual graduate critique sessions, including Faith Wilding, Lee Wen, Ron Athey, Jaime McMurry, Erica Mott, Kira O'Reilly, Vlatka Horvat, La Ribot, Lynn Lu, and many others. While at SAIC, many performance students work collaboratively or individually in the galleries and spaces in Chicago's performance community, including a network of experimental, non-traditional, and artist-initiated spaces. In many cases, the city itself becomes an urban classroom as students engage with numerous communities through projects and performances. Our students are challenged to think of themselves not simply as individual artists, but as active participants in the shaping of contemporary culture. Possible Performance Paths
As contemporary practice moves fluidly across materials and methods, many courses at SAIC address the intersection between sculptural, performative, interactive, immersive, screen/camera/code and material disciplines and explore their shared methods, materials, and critical/theoretical discourse. Graduate students are encouraged to consider their art-making process as an interdisciplinary practice that can range across various departments including, but not limited to, Fiber and Material Studies; Sculpture; Performance;Fashion Design; Art and Technology Studies; Film, Video, New Media, and Animation; and Ceramics. Students are encouraged to confer with faculty and graduate advisors to map a course of interdisciplinary study that reflects the latest development in contemporary practices in these fields. Critical/Activist Social and Political Performance: Extreme bodies in Performance; Border Crossing; Performing Next Feminisms; and Tactical Performance

Ode to the Living Tree and the Conference of Birds is a dance between improvisation and composition, containing a solo and a trio presented back-to-back with a “fold” in the middle.
The solo dancer establishes a structure, a landscape. A musician remembers that landscape as sound. A trio of birds outlines its shape; dancing around it, revealing the imprint and memory of the solo. With each breath the dancer, the musicians and the birds remember and begin again.
Co-created by Josh Hoglund and Elise Cowin with Bryan Saner (performance), Jessica Ray (performance) and Zachary Nicol (performance), as well as Michael Zerang (sound) and Christine Shallenberg (lights and costumes).

Co-Prosperity is thrilled to present Men I Have Ever Met, a group exhibition anchored on 100+ written encounters revisiting Sungjae Lee‘s q***r journey navigating interpersonal relationships.
Lee invited 5 q***r Asian artists, Club Chow , Eugene I-Peng Tang , Jay Carlon , Jinu Hong , and Vincent Chong who are based in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York to present creative responses to Lee’s stories. Projects for Peace is an initiative open to undergraduate students enrolled at SAIC to design a grassroots project for the summer of 2023—anywhere in the world—which promote peace and address the root causes of conflict. Applicants are encouraged to use their creativity to design projects and employ innovative techniques for engaging project participants in ways that focus on conflict resolution, reconciliation, building understanding and breaking down barriers which cause conflict and maintaining peace. Projects will be selected for funding at $10,000 each.

Various teaching approaches and structures will be explored, including leading discussions about ideas and art, conducting critiques, working with diverse groups and individuals, instructional design (curriculum, syllabus, project assignments, etc.) and demonstrating and presenting ideas and materials. We will examine issues related to assessment for individuals and for institutions, ideas about 'the canon' and look at the histories of different educational experiments and ideas. We will consider evolving conceptions of teaching in different higher education contexts: art schools, liberal arts colleges, community colleges, and research universities.
