Parents,

Here's a statistic that should get every family's attention:

While 89% of educators believe students are prepared for the workforce, only about half of graduates agree.

In fact, just 51% of graduates say they have the AI skills needed for the jobs they are applying for.

The issue isn't intelligence.
It isn't motivation.
And it certainly isn't potential.

The issue is that many students spend years learning academic content but very little time learning how to advocate for themselves, build relationships, communicate their value, and navigate the professional world.

I call this professional fluency.

It's the ability to confidently answer:
• Tell me about yourself.
• Why should we hire you?
• What makes you different?
• What value do you bring?

These aren't senior-year skills.

They're life skills.

The students who build them early are often the ones securing internships, mentors, leadership opportunities, and jobs before graduation.

As parents, we invest heavily in education.

But one of the most valuable gifts we can give our children is teaching them how to communicate the value of that education.

Because talent is important. But talent that can advocate for itself creates opportunity.

The Professional Literacy Gap: What School Never Taught You

Nobody failed you on purpose. But it seems the education system did not prepare you for this. Not because you didn't work hard enough.

Because the reality is, there's a massive gap between what school teaches and what the modern workplace actually demands, and most people don't discover it until they're already in it.

Here's what the 2026 data is showing us:
- 40% of employers worldwide can't find entry-level workers with the skills needed to succeed, and the top deficits aren't technical. They're communication, adaptability, and problem-solving.
- 60% of digital workplaces identify a lack of communication and collaboration skills as a major barrier to productivity. Not a software problem. A people fluency problem.
- 77% of hiring managers say communication skills are the single most important factor in determining a new hire's success, ahead of degrees, credentials, and experience.
- 87% of companies either have a skills gap right now or expect one within two years. The gap isn't closing. It's widening.

Professional literacy isn't about being smart.

It's knowing how to show up, communicate clearly, build trust fast, and navigate environments no classroom ever simulated.

The people who thrive aren't always the most credentialed. They're the most fluent in the language of the workplace, the language of leadership, and the language of their own value.

That's precisely why school2life was created. And it has proven to change everything for thousands of clients and students.

Have you felt this gap? The moment when your degree stopped being enough, drop a note below.
If you're ready to close it, reach out, as we are here to help!

I propose a new college graduation requirement. Thoughts?

After 20+ years as a trusted resource for institutions, corporations, nonprofits, students, and parents, I want to propose a new college graduation requirement.

Cengage Group’s 2026 career readiness data shows that only 51% of graduates feel prepared for emerging workplace skills like AI. That does not reflect a lack of talent. It reflects a preparation gap.

A gap that starts in the first year and grows every semester that students go without the tools to translate their education, experiences, and strengths into market value. I call it the translation gap.

Institutions are not closing it fast enough. Corporations are absorbing the costs through onboarding and workforce-readiness challenges. Nonprofits are working overtime to bridge it for the populations who can least afford to fall behind. And students and families are paying for it long after graduation.

A four-year embedded framework addresses this by ensuring every student graduates with the professional fluency to confidently compete in today’s market. Families are questioning ROI more than ever.

Students are entering a tighter market shaped by AI disruption, shrinking entry-level hiring, and increased competition for internships and early-career opportunities.

What everyone is really asking is: Show me the return.

The return is a graduate who can clearly market themselves, articulating the relevant value of their experiences and compete in a market where communication, positioning, relationship-building, and professional visibility remain deeply human differentiators.

Recruiters increasingly evaluate candidates online before the first conversation happens. Employers are placing greater emphasis on demonstrated skills, internships, portfolios, and applied experience alongside degrees. Competitive internship recruiting now begins as early as August for the following summer.

The students securing those opportunities typically started building visibility, relationships, and experience long before senior year.

Every student in this framework leaves with:
• A LinkedIn profile built from day one
• A portfolio translating academic work into employer language
• A professional website and digital presence
• A network built intentionally across four years

And, for first-generation students, the stakes are even higher.

More than half of U.S. undergraduates are first-generation college students. Yet, many enter the workforce without access to the unwritten professional rules and networks that impact long-term mobility and earnings.

What would have been different if you had started building your network and professional presence in your first year instead of scrambling in your last year of undergrad?

We have been delivering this framework since 2000. If you’re ready to close the translation gap, let’s talk. [email protected].

If you're job hunting in 2026 and your strategy is "apply and hope,"
I need you to stop. Not because your skills aren't good enough.
Because the game changed.

Here's what's actually happening in the 2026 job market:
▸ Skills-based hiring has arrived. Nearly half of all recruiters are now using skills data, not job titles, to evaluate candidates. Your last company name doesn't carry the weight it used to.
▸ Your LinkedIn IS your first interview. 72% of recruiters look you up before they even read your resume. And 54% have already eliminated a candidate because of what they found, or didn't find online.
▸ Your personal brand is paying other people's bills. 44% of employers have hired someone specifically because of a strong personal brand. Meanwhile, most people's LinkedIn still reads like a job description from 2018.
▸ Individual voices dominate. Posts from personal profiles get 8x more engagement than identical content from company pages. The algorithm is literally rewarding you for showing up as a human.

Professional fluency in 2026 isn't a soft skill.

It's knowing how to communicate your value so clearly and consistently that the right opportunities start finding YOU.

I've worked with thousands of professionals on exactly this, and the ones who move fastest are never the most experienced in the room. They're the most visible.

Which one are you right now: the best-kept secret, or the obvious choice?

Drop your answer below. Let's talk about it.

Marketing Yourself 101: Before you can sell a company’s goods or services, you have to be able to sell yourself.

That does not mean being flashy. It means being intentional.

If you cannot articulate your value, it is hard to earn trust, win buy-in, or lead conversations. And those are business skills, not just job-search skills.

Personal branding is career infrastructure. It is how you build credibility, both internally and externally. It's important that we all know how to communicate or market ourselves with sophistication, relevance, and confidence, as this is the tri-fecta necessary to connect your experiences and capabilities to the opportunities you are pursuing :) New to marketing yourself? Investing in your brand is investing in your future outcomes!!

70% of employers now hire based on skills. The résumé got your graduate in the room.

It won't get them the offer.

Employers want people who can communicate clearly, build relationships, and speak confidently about their experience.

Soft skills are now 4x more valued than technical ability.

Parents of college and high school students… one of the most powerful ways to build confidence in young people is helping them SEE their own progress, achievements, and growth over time.

Research on student self-efficacy consistently shows that “mastery experiences,” recognizing personal accomplishments and progress, are one of the strongest predictors of confidence, motivation, and future achievement. Students who reflect on their successes are more likely to persist through challenges, advocate for themselves, and believe they can succeed.

That’s exactly why we built School2Life Gallery, think Pinterest meets LinkedIn, to help students organize, showcase, and better understand their experiences, accomplishments, skills, and growth in a meaningful way.

When students can clearly see their own value and progress, confidence grows naturally. And confidence changes everything.

Please share with parents and students in your network who may benefit from additional support and guidance as they prepare for college, internships, and future career opportunities.
