The AJH Hypertension Summer School is honored to present the First Suzanne Oparil Lecture, named in honor of Dr. Suzanne Oparil, Distinguished Professor of Medicine and expert in Vascular Biology and Hypertension at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has served as President of the American Heart Association and the American Society of Hypertension and was the first female president of the American Federation for Clinical Research. Dr. Oparil has received numerous awards for her contributions to academic medicine, particularly in cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. Her research spans molecular, cellular, animal, and clinical studies.
The inaugural Suzanne Oparil Lecture recipient is Dr. Karen Griffin, Professor of Medicine and Division Director of Nephrology at Loyola University Medical Center and Renal Section Chief at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital.
She focuses on hypertension and kidney disease, directing Loyola's AHA Comprehensive Hypertension Center. Recognized as a U.S. News & World Report Top Doctor, her research examines hypertension's role in chronic kidney disease and related nephropathies. Dr. Griffin has received numerous awards, including the American Medical Women's Association Awards for Leadership and Academic Excellence, the Arthur C. Corcoran Memorial Lecture, and the Lois T. Ellison Lecture.

The AJH Hypertension Summer School is honored to present the First Ernesto L. Schiffrin Lecture, named in honor of Dr. Ernesto Schiffrin, Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Hypertension and the inaugural recipient of this lectureship.
Dr. Schiffrin is Professor and Vice-Chair (Research) at McGill University, Physician-in-Chief at Jewish General Hospital, and Canada Research Chair in Hypertension and Vascular Research at Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research.
He is internationally recognized for his pioneering work on the remodeling of resistance arteries in hypertension and his seminal studies on angiotensin II, aldosterone, and endothelin. His research has laid the foundation for treatments that prevent vascular injury and improve patient outcomes in hypertension.
