Here’s what you’ll make at Oaxaca in Chicago.
Maybe alebrijes — the brilliantly painted wood carvings from the Oaxacan highlands. Maybe traditional black clay pottery from San Bartolo Coyotepec. Maybe woven textile work connecting to centuries of Zapotec weaving tradition.
Led by world-renowned Oaxacan artists and artisans who’ve spent their lives inside these traditions — not reenacting them, but living them.
Woven alongside: research-backed writing instruction from With Partners, designed for educators of multilingual learners. The art-making isn’t separate from the instruction. It is the instruction.
The moment you create something in a new cultural tradition — guided by an artist speaking a different language, navigating tools you’ve never used — you understand, from the inside, what your students experience every day.

What do teachers say after three days at Oaxaca in Chicago?
They talk about their students differently. They talk about their classrooms differently. They talk about themselves differently.
There’s a consistent pattern in the testimonials we hear from past participants: the experience creates a shift in perspective that they couldn’t have anticipated — and that they bring back directly into how they plan, teach, and respond to student writing.
They see their students’ cultural backgrounds not as context to acknowledge, but as the actual substance of instruction.
That’s exactly what Oaxaca in Chicago is designed to do.

This is what a district director said after participating in a Paridad institute:
“Summit School District 104 participated in the Paridad Language Culture and Art Institute in the summer of 2016 and we were entirely thrilled with the experience. Even more impactful however were the professional and personal transformations that our participants underwent. As educators of linguistically and culturally diverse students, this trip provided a window into the reality of our students and the communities from which they prevail. Every last one of our participants was changed as a result of our experience in both professional and personal ways. Summit looks forward to a continued collaboration with Paridad.”
— J. Baricovich, Director of Assessment and English Learner Programming, Cook County School District 104
That’s what we’re building toward. That’s June 24–26.

Oaxaca in Chicago moves past the what — and deep into the how.
Woven throughout the institute’s three days is research-backed writing instruction from With Partners, designed specifically for educators of multilingual learners. It’s built on one foundational premise: multilingual students are not struggling writers. They are writers navigating multiple communicative worlds simultaneously — and they need teachers who know how to meet them there.
You’ll leave with a toolkit of actionable, strengths-based writing strategies and engaging art projects ready for your classroom.
Not someday. That Tuesday.

Your students don’t leave their language and heritage at the door when they walk into your classroom. They carry it with them — and it’s one of the most powerful instructional assets you have.
Most professional development tells you this. Oaxaca in Chicago shows you what to do with it.
Teachers who’ve participated in past Paridad institutes describe something that’s hard to put into words: a shift in how they see their students, plan their lessons, and respond to a piece of writing. A shift that doesn’t fade when the institute ends.
It begins June 24 in Pilsen.

Wondering what three days at Oaxaca in Chicago actually looks like? Here’s a window.
☀️ Morning: A world-renowned Oaxacan artist leads you through a traditional art form — ceramics, weaving, painting, printmaking. You create with your hands. You experience navigating a new cultural framework. It’s exhilarating — and it’s also exactly what your students experience in your classroom every day.
✍️ Afternoon: Sonia Esquivel of With Partners takes that morning’s experience and connects it directly to what it means to teach writing to multilingual learners. Not abstract strategies — specific, actionable approaches you can use that Tuesday morning.
🌇 End of day: You leave with art you made, a new toolkit, and a way of seeing your students you didn’t have before.
Then you do it again the next day. And the day after.
