The Chicago Research Colloquium is an annual event that highlights exceptional undergraduate scholarship that focuses on Chicago and Chicagoland issues. Presentations are made by student finalists for the annual Chicago Studies Undergraduate Research Prize, which is awarded at the conclusion of the Colloquium.
After the Colloquium, the presenters and their guests are welcome to join Chicago Studies for our annual City in a Garden Party, to be held in the courtyard outside 1155 E. 60th (weather permitting).
For over 20 years, UChicago students, staff, and community members have been learning the history of UChicago's neighboring communities on their bicycles, guided by notoriously avid bikers College Dean John W Boyer, author of The University of Chicago: A History, and Professor John Mark Hansen, author of The City in a Garden: A Guide to the History of Hyde Park and Kenwood. Our 25-mile Spring tour takes participants on deep dives into the stories of key figures and significant places across the Southeast Side. The tour is free and open to students, faculty, staff.
Participants must provide their own bicycles and helmets. Bikes should be in good working order, and appropriately sized for their riders. Chicago Studies will offer bottled water, individually wrapped snacks, hand sanitizer, a bike pump for general use, and a support vehicle equipped with a bike rack in case of emergencies.
Riders will meet at the south plaza of Regenstein Library (at 1100 E. 57th St.) at 9:00 AM to check in. The tour will depart no later than 9:15 AM, and will return to campus no later than 3:00 PM. The tour's total length is approximately 25 miles, with frequent stops.

Join Chicago Studies and Facilities Services for a walking exhibit of Frederick Law Olmsted's influence on UChicago's campus, as part of the Olmsted200 celebration. Recognized as the founder of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) revolutionized our nation’s civic realm. His work on the Midway Plaisance, Washington Park, and Jackson Park, as well as the work of his two sons at the University of Chicago, are local expressions of Olmsted's legacy. In this walking exhibition, we explore various sites on campus that showcase the Olmsted Brothers’ work and demonstrate how Frederick Law Olmsted’s influence continues to shape our campus.
