The foundation that used a grant to make grants obsolete 03/25/2026

Last week, our Chair & Co-Founder Irene Pritzker joined Devex to share how IDP Foundation and Sinapi Aba Savings and Loans built a sustainable education financing mode in Ghana.

What makes it work? Pairing access to affordable loans with financial literacy training that help school leaders manage cash flow and build stronger, more resilient businesses.

Now expanded to Kenya, the model is going further. Through the $84M Generation Empowerment Fund, managed by Save the Children Global Ventures, this proven approach is being scaled to new markets and investing in local financial institutions to expand access to education worldwide.

The foundation that used a grant to make grants obsolete How do you use philanthropic capital to build a credit market for schools and eventually make the subsidy unnecessary? The IDP Foundation did it over 15 years in Ghana and Kenya. Here is what worked.

We had the London book launch of Irene Pritzker's The School in the Market.

Hosted by UBS, the conversation reflected on the journey of the IDP Foundation and on the shared priority of investing in education as a driver of opportunity and long-term impact. The panel included Tom Hall, CEO of UBS Optimus Foundation; Magdalena Gatzinska, UBS Vice Chair EMEA; Victoria Hagmann, Head of UBS Global Wealth Management UK; and our CEO, Corina Gardner.

Thank you to the UBS team for convening such a rich and forward-looking dialogue about how philanthropy can leverage private capital to open new markets to achieve impact at scale. We look forward to continuing to grow this model in partnership with UBS and many others.

IDP Foundation | Press Event: Youth Speaks for Education 01/24/2026

On this International Day of Education, themed “The power of youth in co-creating education,” we’re reminded that meaningful education change doesn’t happen for young people, it happens with them.

From classrooms to communities, youth bring lived experience, insight, and solutions that strengthen education systems on the ground. When their voices are included, education becomes more equitable and more responsive to real needs.

At IDP Foundation, we’ve seen the power of youth voice firsthand from our Youth Speaks for Education event in 2024. We remain committed to creating spaces where young people can share, shape, and lead the conversations that affect their education and futures.
