Northwesternβs Medill School of Journalism and the Scholastic Press Association of Chicago honored Beacon and DubTV programs for their reporting this year during the annual 2026 Scholastic Press Association Awards. Recognized individuals include Hector Cruz Victoria (Feature Writing), Ilse Hammond, Abdulatif Balogun, Liam Fitzgerald, Symone Harden, and Gemma Park (Overall Paper), Gemma Park (Opinion Writing), and Alison Malton (Sports Broadcasting).
Principal Harris was awarded the principal of the year award, a distinction that includes $500 grant devoted to the schoolβs journalism program. Faculty sponsor Benjamin Gucciardi was selected for the annual Teacher Fellowship, which provides $1500 for continuing education.
Additionally, a grant proposal authored by senior student journalists Lilah Rosenfeld and Kate Evans was accepted by the Illinois Farm Bureau and Illinois Press Foundation. Amid ongoing budget uncertainty, these funds will ensure physical production of the Beacon student newspaper through 2027.
