At its June 28th meeting, the Chicago Friends School Board of Directors came to the heart-wrenching conclusion that due to extreme financial constraints, we could not responsibly commit to continuing operations into the 2026-2027 academic year. During our deliberations we came to grips with the fact that CFS is part of a regrettable trend, both here in Chicago and across the nation, where small independent K-8 schools are particularly challenged by the uncertain economy, the broader landscape of school options, and the declining number of school-age children in the U.S. population. Given the stark reality of our own position, we decided, with heavy hearts, to lay the school down at the completion of the 2025-2026 year that had just ended.

We know that our “small but mighty” school produced a strong legacy in the hearts and minds of our students and graduates. And in this spirit, we share with you the words that some of our alumni delivered during their 8th grade graduation speeches:

It’s good to be kind and kindness is contagious. One small act of kindness can change someone’s day and make it better. – Asher, Class of ‘25

I will remember this school as a place that has felt so safe and welcoming. I was shocked when I learned that bullying is typical in other schools, cause I had no idea. – Elijah, Class of ‘26

The Chicago Friends School community helped me feel more comfortable as a person. …. This environment encouraged me to take on new challenges that I would not have considered before…. Over the years, I have learned to respect others’ opinions and be a good friend. I also have tools for peacefully resolving conflicts. Although I am not Quaker myself, the Quaker testimonies are part of my own core values. – Luke, Class of ‘22

Equality calls to confront injustices and inequalities and to embrace our differences. It lets me push for diversity and inclusivity and to ensure that every voice is valued. – Ivaylo, Class of 24

…what I’ll take with me through my high school journey is Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles, and it is something that we have all learned to value deeply during our time in Chicago Friends. Integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. It means being truthful, reliable, and fair. – Joyce, Class of 24
I am thankful for our Quaker community for nurturing the SPICES: simplicity, peace, integrity, equality, stewardship, and most important to me - community. Community is what helps all of us in the face of hardship. The community supported me in the face of when I was struggling to succeed in school, stressed about my work, and worried about what would happen in the future. – Ollie, Class of ‘25

Across the 15 years since its founding, Chicago Friends School has provided a vibrant K-8 educational option in Edgewater and Andersonville, blending progressive pedagogy and Quaker values within a nurturing and inclusive community. We lay CFS down with great sadness for our current families, staff, and members of our extended CFS “family” who have dedicated themselves to the school through countless hours of volunteer service and generous financial support. We are deeply grateful to all who have made CFS what it has been over the years. During this difficult time, the board would like to acknowledge the inspired and dedicated leadership of Karen Carney, who has served as Head of School for the past 11 years, Chicago Friends has shaped the lives of dozens of students who are, in turn, carrying all that they learned at CFS out into the world.

During last week's graduation ceremony each graduate was introduced by a community member of their choosing, and then gave brief remarks. After this we went into a period of Quaker silence, during which anyone could stand and offer well wishes, memories, or other thoughts to the graduates.
