Hello to my friends from the Taft Class of 1979. I’ve caught myself thinking about our reunion since it took place 9 days ago on a cloudy/rainy day in September. We had a lot of fun! The pictures being posted attest to a good time and a great turnout. I’m going to try to not be too longwinded here, but I’d like to recognize a few people whose efforts made our evening possible. First, I would like to mention THE TEAM. I’ve worked on other reunions, and I think that having email, texting and Facebook made everything much, much easier. That being said, our classmates who took the time to ‘step up’ and make it all happen need to be commended.
Nancy Clark Flynn, Cindy Culliton Graf and Ray Gerlach reached out to various locations and did a lot of negotiating to find a great place for our event, and we finally decided on Moretti’s, with a private, first floor room, music and even some free pizza. The bartender told me that everyone was tipping generously, which shows that our class has class! The venue was perfect, the room was full, and the price was right (special thanks to Negotiator Nancy).
I’d also like to recognize Gwen Fransen Sandstrom for bringing in the HUGE picture from our 10-year reunion (Have you Found Yourself Yet?) that invited our classmates to circle their picture from our get together 30 years ago. Gwen also set up an email account to manage the information people sent in for the slide show. Our CD didn’t work that night, but if you participated by sending in your information and pictures, I would be happy to send you a PDF of the slideshow. I’d like to recognize our decorations committee, including Terri Conway Stencel, Kathy Drake Frederickson, Sue Steinert, Paula Koumas and Bob Wallace. You guys knocked it out of the park! The room was a sea of blue, silver and white, and it looked like we were ready for a Taft Eagles pep rally! Who among you didn’t love the blue and silver Hershey’s kisses on the table tops? And how about the Class of 1979 picture frame, seen in many of the photos, framing groups of our classmates smiling faces? The décor was energetic and super fun, and it inspired a party atmosphere.
On a sobering note, we have lost 40+ members of our class, and thanks to Nancy Clark Flynn, nobody (including the teachers who have passed) was forgotten. Nancy framed their yearbook pictures, set them out in a group at the front of the room, and added some tiny white lights to bring attention to the display. I overheard people saying, “wow, I didn’t realize he/she was gone”, and as one person remarked, looking at the number of classmates who are gone was “somewhat overwhelming”. Nancy worked very hard researching leads and compiling this information to make sure that our list was complete.
On a personal note, I’d like to thank Margaret Nagle for designing the template of our slide show. Those of you who participated will be very happy with the outcome. I’d also like to say thank you to THE TEAM, including Barb Wosh*tz, for our fun meetings at Morettis. Planning this reunion was easy because everyone pitched in and got it done. You all exceeded everyone’s expectations. I am proud to say that I am a member of TAFT HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1979, and I'm happily looking forward to our chance to next get together. Lisa Brandt

Wish you were there! You know who you are. We had a small but lovely group at the 39th reunion last Saturday at EPI. Plans are being made for our FORTIETH reunion next year. Do you remember...the 21st day of September? Hold Saturday SEPTEMBER 21, 2019 on your calendar. Out of town folks will appreciate the location - ROSEMONT, IL, a short uber ride from O'Hare and close to plenty of hotels. More info will be forthcoming, just SAVE THE DATE.
