The STEM Magnet Academy

The STEM Magnet Academy Dr. Maria J. McManus, Principal STEM Magnet Academy opened its doors to Kindergarten - Third grade students on September 6, 2011.

The STEM Magnet Academy is the very first Chicago Public School with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics as its educational foci. Each year, STEM will add a grade until it services students in grades Kindergarten - Eight. Education at STEM Magnet Academy: The acronym STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The STEM curriculum is designed to incorporate the STEM comp

onents into all disciplines. STEM education changes the typical teacher-centered classroom by incorporating a curriculum that utilizes problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning and requires students to actively engage in a problem in order to find its solution.

Paper Chain Challenge! Fourth grade students worked with a partner to build the longest paper chain with one piece of paper, scissors, and a glue stick. Students brainstormed strategies, determined roles, and practiced teamwork! We love building strong classroom communities during the first week of school.

STEM Summer Camp 2026, that’s a wrap! We ended an amazing summer with a trip to the Field Museum, lots of outdoor play, superhero adventures, slime making, tap class, camp games, and so many memories. It was a summer filled with learning, laughter, creativity, and friendships.

We kicked off the week with a special visit from the Chicago Fire Department, beat the heat with lots of camp games, and explored the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Campers also got creative with rock painting, sand necklaces, 3D pen creations, and temporary tattoos before wrapping up the week with more slime, more tap dancing, and a fun show-and-tell to share all of their favorite things. We can’t believe there’s only one week of camp left!

Week three was packed with adventure! We explored the Museum of Science and Industry, launched rockets, built gumdrop towers, flew kites, and stayed active with football, games, and plenty of outdoor fun. We also cooled off with popsicles and kept dancing in tap class. We can’t wait to see what week four has in store!
