We have gathered virtually today to honor the victims and survivors of the genocide in Srebrenica that occurred in 1995 from July 11th through July 22nd. 8,373 Bosnian Muslims, primarily men and boys, were executed in the Srebrenica region of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Today, you will hear and you will see volunteers from around the world who have taken the time to read some of the names of the 8,373 Srebrenica genocide victims. While you may not know these names personally, we want you to take the time to listen and/or read the names being recited.

The genocide in Bosnia serves as a stark reminder of the horrors of war and the devastating consequences of ethnic hatred. July 11th is vital in preserving the historical record and countering denial and revisionism. By remembering and documenting the atrocities committed during the Srebrenica genocide, we confront the past and reject any attempts to distort or deny the truth. It stands as a collective commitment to truth-telling, justice, and accountability.

And the first truth that must be spoken is a name.

With our program today, we will know all 8,373 of their names.

This video includes the names of the 373 Srebrenica genocide victims whose names have been sorted alphabetically. If you would like to read along, here is the list of names: https://bit.ly/8373victims.

Preminuo dugogodišnji novinar Mugdim Karabeg 11/26/2022

This week we received heartbreaking news about the passing of a Chicago community member and distinguished journalist, Mugdim Karabeg.

Known for his editorial leadership in the Bosnian newspaper Oslobođenje, Mr.Karabeg inspired and mentored multiple generations of journalists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans at large.

In Chicago, he was an avid contributor to many news portals, including Chicago Raja, where most of his recent work was archived.

Mr. Karabeg was 93 years old when he passed and leaves behind a family and a large community in mourning.

Our community is grateful to him for his commitment to journalistic integrity, his ongoing activism in defending the truth, and in combating genocide denial.

We send our deepest condolences to the Karabeg family and the Chicago community for mourning his passing.

The victims were found at 501 different locations, in 73 mass graves and in two neighboring countries of Serbia & Croatia.

Over 1600 victims have yet to be identified and laid to rest. Each day that passes with these missing victims is because of genocide perpetrators and their associates who refuse to come forward and disclose more information. In the face of genocide, we need brave people to stand up and do what’s right.

Genocide denial makes sure that justice is not served and that victim’s families cannot be at peace. We bear witness.
