Vince Guaraldi (1928-1976) was a jazz pianist and beloved composer of the animated adaptations of the “Peanuts” comic strip. His 1962 album, Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus, featured the hit single “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” which won a Grammy award for Best Original Jazz Composition.

Erskine Hawkins (1914-1993), a trumpeter and big band leader from Birmingham, AL, was dubbed “The 20th Century Gabriel.” Hawkins and his ‘Bama State Collegians moved to New York in 1934 and became regulars at the Savoy Ballroom, a music and dancing venue called the “Heartbeat of Harlem” by poet Langston Hughs. Hawkins’ major hits include “Tuxedo Junction,” “After Hours” and “Tippin’ In.”
