HELP ME SURPRISE PETER M COOKE!

This is an open invitation to fans, friends, colleagues and students of Peter M. Cooke.

This month is the 25th anniversary of MICA! I (Annette, his wife) plan to surprise him with a little MICA celebration at home — with the biggest surprise to be letters and cards from colleagues, friends and students congratulating him, telling him what he means to them, etc.

If you’re willing, please MAIL your card or note to the following address. A friend is going to collect them for me so Peter doesn’t catch wind of things in advance. If you can do so by February 20 at the latest, that’d be awesome.

Peter M. Cooke Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

MICA is pleased and humbled to share the news that Peter M. Cooke received the 2023 Snider Lifetime Achievement Award from the Environmental Information Association (EIA). The award was presented to him at EIA’s annual meeting in Nashville, TN in late March.

The award, established in 2002, is given each year to an environmental industry professional who has provided long-term, dedicated service to the industry; has had multi-faceted involvement in and made volunteer contributions to the profession; displays ethical business practices, and has had insufficient prior recognition.

After a 40-year career in the industry as a microscopy educator, a contributor to NVLAP/NIST and AIHA policies and procedures, a NVLAP auditor and consultant, Peter continues to pursue his love of teaching microscopy onsite at laboratories and organizations throughout the world. His objective has always been to further analysts’ understanding of the underlying fundamentals of microscopy so that they become confident, knowledgeable analysts who can efficiently prepare samples and deliver accurate, interpretable results.

Our thanks to EIA and the committee for selecting Peter for this distinct honor.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE — April 2, 2020

Sharing the joy of microscopy with students is the lifeblood of MICA. Yet at this time, the health and safety of our communities must take precedence. We feel duty bound to adhere to the “social distancing” and “shelter in place” directives from the Governor of Illinois that yesterday were extended through April 30, 2020.

To that end, we are officially cancelling our Spring courses. Students who were enrolled in those courses may move their registration to a future date or, if preferred, contact us for a full refund.

Registration for courses in the second half of the year will likely fill quickly, so be sure to register to ensure your seat. We are considering adding additional courses later in the year when the present situation is behind us. Please check our website, promotional emails and postcards for updates in that regard.

Until then, do all you can to keep yourselves and your families safe and healthy.

Coronavirus Update
With the ever-changing COVID-19 situation, the world is fraught with uncertainty. Like you, MICA believes that the health and safety of our communities, families and loved ones is a shared priority. With that in mind, here is our current plan for our courses in Chicago.

At present, we are maintaining our regularly scheduled 2020 schedule. However, if the “social distancing” and “shelter in place” directives from the Governor of Illinois continue beyond the current April 7, 2020 deadline – or if the health and well-being of our students and staff would be jeopardized – we will begin to cancel courses as it makes sense to do so.

The viability of near-term onsite courses is also subject to local and federal directives. Please feel free to contact us if you’d like to talk about scheduling an onsite course at your laboratory later in the year.

Students already enrolled in April or May courses may move their registration to a future date or, if preferred, contact us for a full refund. Registration for courses in the second half of the year will likely fill quickly, so feel free to register at any time. If the need arises, we will consider adding additional courses later in the year when the present situation is behind us.
