Last Tuesday, the Sankofa Class (6th Grade) of Betty Shabazz Academy had the wonderful opportunity to host during STEM class with Mama Kelly 🙌🏿 🌍🖥️

The watoto dove into the world of GIS Data Models and learned how to apply them to map out our very own makerspace lab inside the school. For young minds, engaging with these cutting-edge IT concepts is a rare and invaluable experience, so this was incredible!

In today’s tech-driven world, it’s more important than ever for our future leaders to gain hands-on knowledge, skills, and experiences in IT. Empowering our young Black children with STEM/STEAM education is key to breaking barriers and building brighter futures💡

BEHIND THE SCENES 🏀! We got a chance to snap a few BTS moments yesterday during BASA’s basketball team photoshoot for all sports teams. While taking these photos, we got a glimpse of the young brothers’ hard work, focus, and self-determination (kujichagulia).

Our hope is that through the power of performing arts, they’re not just learning choreography but also embracing tradition, celebrating Black culture, and developing skills that will help nurture their growth as artists and scholars.

LADY PANTHERS ARE CHAMPS 🏀🐾!

This past Saturday, the Lady Panthers BATTLED. What an incredible win!! The sisters pulled off an intense 20-18 victory against the Kenwood Broncos in a close match to claim the title of St. Sabina Unity League Girls Championship 🏆.

A huge shout to Head Coach Baba Anri and Assistant Coach Mama Rayonna for their unwavering dedication. We have seen the growth and resilience of these young scholar-athletes and it reflects your hard work and commitment ❤️🖤💚!

Also, Asante Sana to the amazing parents who supported the team and cheered on the Lady Panthers every step of the way!

The Lady Panthers have come so far, and our school village is incredibly proud of each and every single one of you! A special Asante Sana to the staff members from both campuses who showed their support at the game!

✨📚READ AROUND SHABAZZ DAY was such a special moment! Earlier this month, the primary team of Shabazz Academy led the schools’ version of “Read Across America Week” by creating fun ways to engage with our watoto to celebrate the joys of reading!

Our staff joined the fun by dressing up as their favorite book character and we also had the pleasure of a special “read-in” with author and the senior editor of , Ms. Willalyn Fox ✨📚

Last week, our watoto began their tap journey with much excitement and curiosity! Their feet started moving as soon as they laced them up and literally never stopped 😂. Thank you to , we are thrilled and looking forward to another great season with you all✨

Last week, the King College Prep Marching Band brought out all the vibes, inspiration, and wisdom to the Betty Shabazz Academy. Our entire village had a front row seat to young excellence! Taking this time to celebrate the heart and soul of our school village, Baba Eugene! Last week during Counselors Appreciation Week, we took a moment to honor all of the incredible work Baba Eugene does to support our watoto and families. 🎉 100 Days 🎉!!! Last week Friday, we celebrated 100 days of learning, growth, progress and community in the Shabazz village. To our amazing watoto, incredible teachers , and dedicated parents — Asante Sana for being a part of this journey so far this year! Let’s finish the year stronger than ever!

What an incredible day filled with excitement, self-determination, and spelling skills!!! 🐝✨

Today was the 2nd Nea Onnim Spelling Bee sponsored by the Spelling Bee Committee, led by Mama Sagona and it was huge success with our talented watoto showing off their spelling skills and grace under pressure!

The spelling bee will continue tomorrow with our final two contestants as they made it to Round 22 or Round 23!! There were so many rounds, we’re not even sure 😂

Good luck to our final contestants, Hollie Nkrumah Class), and Hannah-Yah (Sankofa Class) as they will compete for the 1st place trophy tomorrow !

In the spirit of our School Wide Spelling Bee, the Spelling Bee Committee will be hosting a movie day featuring the 2006 critically acclaimed drama, “Akeelah and The Bee.” Bring your class, be ready to eat some popcorn, and enjoy some discussion at the end of the film!

We are celebrating STEM this entire week! Today, we have the honor of welcoming back Urban Tech Academy who is a non profit organization with the mission of facilitating seamless transitions from education to careers while also providing opportunities for youth to excel in the ever-evolving digital landscape. Urban Tech will be running a robotics and gaming lounge!

Wednesday, our alum, Nana Arkorful (Class of 2005) and founder and CEO of Arke Inc. will be giving a talk to students about the importance of relevance of STEM today and tomorrow while also highlighting his impact in transportation

On Thursday, the students have the opportunity to meet a civil engineer who also happens to be an alum, Mekhakhem Kheperu (Class of 2008). Mekhakhem will spotlight engineering plus tech and also designing spaghetti marshmallow towers with the watoto.

We celebrate STEM Week simply as an invitation for students to think about how they can pursue their own STEM dreams. STEM Week is just the beginning of their journey into these exciting fields!
