Thank you to everyone who participated in Earth Month 2024. It began with weekly campus sustainability tours and tabling days at Student Center East, which offered a variety of activities for all UIC community members. Comprehensive tours of the university’s arboretum highlighted the vital role of trees in advancing campus sustainability goals.
The month also included pop-up collection events for recycling personal electronics and a biking seminar that addressed essential bicycling skills and how to build rider confidence while promoting sustainable transportation options. In addition, a food recovery informational session showcased the university’s commitment to minimizing food waste and promoting sustainable practices.
We are grateful to everyone who took the time to participate in an Earth Month event and learn more about how we all can help make UIC a more sustainable university.

What do da Bears, Lawn-Guyland and fuhgeddaboudit have in common?
"An accent tells the story of a life," says Tanera Marshall who has taught UIC students and professional actors, including Ebon Moss-Bachrach of “The Bear” and Eamonn Walker and Jesse Spencer of “Chicago Fire," since 2004 how to find the soul of an accent. In Marshall's class, UIC theatre students learn techniques behind speaking with an authentic accent, increasing their chances of landing future professional acting roles.

“As an immigrant and a mother of a second-generation Asian American, I want to understand and support the younger generation,” says Haeyoon Chung, who recently graduated with her doctoral degree from the UIC College of Education.

Before moving to the U.S. in 2011 at age 30, Chung was a mental health counselor in South Korea, where most of her clients were college students. At UIC, she focused her dissertation on the discrimination faced by Asian Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on their mental health after a student confided in her about their own fear and anxiety around this issue.

“My grandpa always told me that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. And the thing I’m truly passionate about, on the deepest level, is nature," says Haley Dahl, who recently graduated from UIC’s College of Engineering.

Dahl found her perfect fit in UIC’s civil, materials and environmental engineering program, balancing her rigorous coursework with her responsibilities as a student-athlete on the UIC Division I track and field team.

This fall, Dahl returns to UIC to pursue her master's degree in civil engineering while working for a Chicago civil engineering firm. She’ll also complete her last year of athletic eligibility for the Flames.

“My value is intrinsic, [and] that understanding, I believe, is the foundation to mental health overall. Particularly within the African American community, we are constantly bombarded with messages that try to tell us differently. And so my interest, why mental health is a focus for me now, is to help change that specific narrative,” says UIC grad Thomas Morris.

After working in IT for 25 years, Morris wants to use his master’s degree in social work from UIC to help Black men, in particular, find mental health care and social support. He’ll begin work on his PhD this fall, also at UIC.

"[Biomedical illustration] really just encompasses a lot of the things that I’ve always been surrounded with and I’ve always been passionate about," says Eyzel Torres-Vicencio, who will graduate with a master’s degree in biomedical visualization from the College of Applied Health Sciences.

Only a handful of universities in the U.S., including UIC, offer a master’s degree in this field. With her master’s degree, Torres-Vicencio wants to help people understand their health, especially mental health and reproductive health. Inspired by childhood experiences translating for her father's medical appointments, she also wants to help overcome language barriers in communicating medical information.
