In October 1966, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, California. Archival sources date the founding and Ten-Point Program to October 15. The organization challenged police brutality while building community programs centered on food, health, education, and political power.

Why Lewis Latimer Was Erased From History

Lewis Latimer was a draftsman, patent expert, author, and inventor who worked in the technical worlds associated with Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. Yet his name rarely appears in the simplified stories Americans learn about the telephone, electric lighting, and industrial innovation.

Freddie Taylor examines how invention becomes attached to a single famous figure while Black engineers, technical specialists, and collaborative teams disappear from public memory. Restoring Latimer’s contribution gives us a more accurate history of American technology and Black genius.

In October 1974, the Cleveland Indians named Frank Robinson their player-manager, making him the first Black manager in Major League Baseball. The official announcement came on October 3, and Robinson managed his first regular-season game on April 8, 1975—hitting a home run in his first at-bat.

The Burglary That Exposed COINTELPRO

In 1971, activists broke into an FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania, and delivered secret documents to journalists. Those records helped expose COINTELPRO, a federal counterintelligence program that used surveillance and disruption against political organizations and Black freedom movements.
