SUR in English, Málaga’s English-language paper, spent time this month with the University of Chicago team excavating the Phoenician site of Cerro del Villar. Nearly fifty archaeologists, students, and volunteers, working alongside colleagues from the University of Málaga, spent the season uncovering a large multipurpose building dating to the eighth century BC.

Carolina López-Ruiz, professor of ancient Mediterranean religions and mythologies at the Divinity School, has helped lead the University of Chicago’s involvement at the site for five years. When asked why the team chose this particular corner of the settlement, she pointed to work done decades earlier: “It connects with the excavations led by archaeologist María Eugenia Aubet.”

Join the Divinity School on Thursday, October 22, at 5 p.m. for the 2026 Nuveen Lecture in Swift Hall’s third-floor lecture room.

Patrick Jagoda, William Rainey Harper Professor of English Language and Literature and of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago, will deliver “Nonhuman Creation: Approaching AI Art through Apophatic Aesthetics, Nonconscious Experiments, and Alien Imaginaries.” He asks what an old theological habit, describing the divine by what escapes our language, still has to teach us about generative AI and contemporary art.

Applications for graduate study at the University of Chicago Divinity School open today for the AMRS, MA, MDiv, and PhD.

The Divinity School curriculum is organized by method rather than by religious tradition; students take courses across methodologies and areas of study, learning how to approach their research questions from multiple angles. Master’s students build a course of study with a faculty advisor around their own questions. MDiv students complete fieldwork at placements across the city of Chicago.

Scholarship information is included in the application. Applying by the priority deadline of January 5, 2027 means being considered for the full range of scholarship support.
