Temachtiani Akaxe said this in class about a year ago and it's been so present ever since...

Because this month just like every month, every day, there are auspicious alignments in the Tonalpohualli & the cosmos.

But there was also one when you were born.

There was one every time someone in your lineage was born.

And every time someone in your lineage passed to the Miktlan...

..Creating the incredibly improbable equation to create you. To create me. To create this unique formula of community around us.

You are an auspicious alignment of eons of stars, universes, planets, moons seasons and lifetimes that have aligned incredibly, perfectly to create you.

This is your cosmic moment.

You are the cosmic alignment.

The question therefore isn't what auspicious alignments are in the cosmos to facilitate your evolution.

The question instead is, what are you going to do with this precious, fleeting, cosmic moment that is you…

On this 7th day of the 40 days of honoring death and ancestors, it's important to remember that the native people of this continent Anahuak had an intimate relationship with death. They didn't fear it or give it some unnatural association the way people in Europe had. Instead they honored it as a necessary and important part of maintaining the balance of life on the planet. As students of nature they knew it was not only important but vital to ensure life would continue.

It was customary and encouraged to take the first 4 years after someone passed on to fully grieve & release all of the mourning one had for that individual. To really cry, wail & release it all. It was said that after those first 4 years one ran the risk of holding our loved ones back from transcending to the next level of existence if they felt compelled to stick around for us and our grief. And so they really embraced and made space for taking time for real grief and mourning.

We, like many others, are currently grieving loved ones who have passed within these 4 years. Grief has become a familiar albeit uninvited guest... Grief is a solitary and personal journey and no one can tell you how to grieve. However these ancestral teachings grounded in nature have helped us immensely for grieving is not just about who you've lost, but also about the part of yourself that went with them...

Just as Tonantzin Tlalli begins her descent into her phase of rest and death we too must look into ourselves, reflect and allow those parts of ourselves to go that need to die and transcend... It’s always good to intentionally synchronize ourselves with Tonantzin Tlalli.

If you would like to learn more about the ancestral Mesoamerican perspectives & traditions related to death join us for our special lecture this Saturday at 3pm cst. It will take place in our mighty network, you'll find the link in bio

As the great poet Nezahualcóyotl wrote:

“...inevitably we must leave this earth:⁣
We are borrowed to one another...”⁣

“Here no one lives forever,⁣
Even rulers came here to die...”⁣

Today's New Moon aligns with our transition into Ze Itzkuintli. And so we begin the month where the sharpening and renovation of our mind will be put to a test and we search for the Ketzalkoatl in our heart, the only place where we truly belong...

May we enter this next trecena month with the centrality, reflection & committment to renewal it will require of us
