Happy Wednesday Music Lovers! It's time for a new What's That Instrument Wednesday 👀🥰

This lyre instrument includes 8 strings and is usually made of a wooden resonator covered in animal skin. Its a small harp-like instrument where performers will pluck the strings - similar to playing a harp. It has five notes, creating a pentatonic scaled instrument. Due to having few notes, it is used as a rhythmic instrument.

Some people see this instrument as a spiritual instrument that has a deep history within some fishing groups. Since it was created in a fishing group, it used local materials to construct it. Fishing line is used to make the strings and the wooden resonator is made of various trees - Fig, Eucalyptus, and Oak. The woods used are extremely strong, so it can take hours to carve out the resonator.

The resonator itself is made to resemble the huts of the fishing tribe. The strings are looped around the top wooden pieces of the instrument, so it can be tuned by tightening the strings around the wood. The instrument can also have percussive accessories with it. These accessories are worn by the performer and are used to add to the performance. Vocals accompany both the percussion accessories and lyre instrument. All together, it creates a full sound of rhythms and melodies.

This instrument has thrived in modern music due to young performers trying different styles. Performers still recommend learning the traditional style of the instrument first before branching out into new ideas. Current players of this instrument have a huge focus on educating younger generations in this instrument, so it may continue to grow and thrive.

Happy Haryana Heroes' Martyrdom Day!

This holiday is observed on the death anniversary of Rao Tula Ram, a freedom fighter during India's first war of independence in 1857.
Rao is a state hero of Haryana and is famous for temporarily driving the British from south-west Haryana during the rebellion, and also assisting rebel forces fighting in Delhi.

Music and dance for Haryanvi people is a great way of demolishing societal differences as folk singers are highly esteemed and they are sought after and invited for the events, ceremonies and special occasions regardless of their caste or status. These inter-caste songs are fluid in nature, and never personalized for any specific caste, and they are sung collectively by women from different strata, castes, dialects.

Rao died from an infection on September 23rd 1863.
On the date of Rao's death, Haryana pays its respect to the freedom fighters, soldiers and all others from the state who have sacrificed their lives for the country
