Keynote speech entitled “Touch the Heart Before You Touch the Brain”.

I shared my experience working with troubled youth throughout my career and how once the students know that you believe in them it helps them to believe in themselves!
“We all need someone who believes in us!” 💪🏽💯❤️

In my first principal job I was in charge of implementing restorative justice and training my teachers and staff. Leading this session on restorative practices at the Innovative Schools Summit today felt so natural and reminded of that.

I reminded the teachers and administrators that, “When it comes to working with a student who may have disrespectful behavior, that we have to get rid of the behavior, but that doesn’t mean getting rid of the child! We can’t throw out the baby with the bath water!”

So who is this extraordinary woman in this photo here with me? 🤩😇

This is Dr. Teresa Lance who is the Assistant Superintendent for Equity and Innovation in Elgin School District U-46.

She is also a mentor to me and she provided an endorsement for my book “Be The Driving Force”, stating that it was “One of the most comprehensive works on equity that all school leaders need to read!”
