Happy Juneteenth National Independence Day!
Juneteenth is a day for reflection of our nation’s past and celebration of the resilience of the African American community.
Mary Elliott, Curator of American Slavery at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture says, “We celebrate July 4th. However, we really give pause to commemorate Juneteenth - reflecting on the moment, and thinking about the opportunities that freedom presented for black people. At the time there were not only legal restraints (until the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment) but there were also societal restraints. Black people were seen as second-class citizens, and it’s an issue that we’re still struggling with today. Juneteenth is for everyone to pause and really think about the meaning and manifestation of freedom.”
There are many Juneteenth events happening across Chicagoland today, so check out the Block Club Chicago link in our bio if you want to learn more.

Current CCPA master's student Jadie Reeves and CCPA alum Ed Frazier Davis (MM - Composition) are both featured composers for the Constellation Men's Ensemble upcoming performance NOVA VIII: chicago seasons! Their music will be featured alongside several other exciting contemporary composers for an event not to be missed.
This free, public event, presented in collaboration with the Chicago Park District, will feature world premieres inspired by the city’s ever-changing landscape—summers at the lake, city street fairs, and the pulse of Chicago’s dynamic community.
