Student Center for Science Engagement

Student Center for Science Engagement The SCSE is a warm, friendly space at NEIU, where students gather to study and engage in science. The SCSE staff members are sensitive to student concerns.

Central to the mission of the SCSE is the support of students in the challenges they face in their academic and career development. In particular, the SCSE assists students interested in or majoring in the following disciplines:

* Biology
* Chemistry
* Computer Science
* Earth Science
* Environmental Science
* Mathematics
* Physics
* Psychology

Since the Center’s establishment in 2009, NEIU has

made significant progress in recruiting undergraduate students to prepare them for research and health careers. Our overriding aim is to serve the diverse community of students for which NEIU is known. Our approachable advisors are keen to offer advice on school, career, and life issues as they impact educational and professional paths. The Center assists students in developing relationships with NEIU faculty, as well as local research-intensive institutions and government agencies. The Field Museum and the USDA are two of our partner institutions. At the Center, you will also find a selection of science magazines and articles on noteworthy scientific discoveries, as well as a science book
exchange, and a battery-recycling center. For comprehensive professional advising and a fun place to engage in science, this center is essential!

Science Communication Info Session!

Learn about the Science Communication Project we offer each semester, how to communicate STEM topics, and how you can earn a stipend!

Laura West will be leading this workshop today at 3pm in BBB 325.

This is a great opportunity and we encourage any student who is interested in STEM to attend!

STEM Faculty Publication alert!

Dr. Tom Campbell and collaborators including NEIU Alum and former SCSE Summer Research Student Nkosi Evans published a study based on his work with the Field Museum.

This study found that programs that allow the public
to engage with museum collections are useful ways to conserve
and digitize. Additionally, the researchers found that participants were highly satisfied and increasingly motivated by contributing to science and supporting the museum, showing that public participation can meaningfully advance biodiversity research.

These findinga show that when people are given meaningful ways to participate in scientific collections, they can move from simply observing science to actively helping preserve and advance it.

Congratulations, Dr. Campbell!

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Here's a little of what the Campbell Research Group (biology) has been doing this summer.

Karen-Gisell and Sarai have been continuing research using moss as a bioindicator of pollution in Chicago and using XRF (X-ray fluorescence).

These SCSE Research Students spent a majority of their time this summer at the Field Museum where they used scientific collections there to explore historical pollution levels and sites, as well as continuing established protocols using XRF.

Part of this work also involved hanging samples of moss at various locations around the museum campus area and using those samples to understand the pollution levels in that area.

We are excited to see your findings at the SCSE Research Symposium next month!

Happy Monday, everyone!

Here's a little of what has been going on with Dr. Wang's (Computer Science) team this summer.

SCSE Summer Research Students Davd, Kevin, and Jabari have been working on a project focusing on the use of AI to detect software vulnerabilities. Unlike most regular security tools that focus on the code itself (a limitation), this novel method can overcome this by identifying the meaning or behavior of the code.

The students have spent the summer building a solid foundation in this field as well as completing entry-level vulnerability labs.

Great job, students!

We didn't get to use the Olfelt Lab's drone this year but a group photo is always a success.

We can't believe we are nearing the end of summer research season!

Happy Friday, everyone!

SCSE Office Manager Agustina has been taking photos of wildflowers on NEIU Campus near the PE building and would like to share them here.

She notes that she loves how nature is always adjusting, often taking over what humans have made. Agustina asserts, "No matter what we build, mother nature will retake what was once stolen."

The metaphor here is that although we build fences, it doesn't stop mother nature from pushing through. A humble reminder of the intelligence that surrounds us in nature.
