Happy Labor Day! As we celebrate enjoy our time off today, we can also use this day as a lesson to teach children the value of work.

In a Montessori setting, hands-on learning is at the heart of everything we do, making this holiday the perfect time to connect real-world lessons with purposeful activities.

Here are a few Montessori-inspired activities you can do with children this Labor Day to teach the spirit of work in a fun, meaningful way:

🧹 1. Practical Life: “Helping Hands at Home”
Montessori emphasizes the dignity of work, even in small tasks. Invite children to take part in jobs around the house—dusting shelves, folding laundry, watering plants, or setting the table. These simple tasks build independence while teaching responsibility and pride in contributing to the community.

🛠️ 2. Community Helper Role Play
Talk with children about different workers— teachers, nurses, construction workers, mail carriers—and the important jobs they do. Set up simple role-play activities with props (like a toy stethoscope, hard hat, or pretend letters). This helps children appreciate the variety of work that keeps our communities running.

🌱 3. Gardening for Growth
Planting seeds or caring for a garden bed is a hands-on activity that connects effort to results. Children learn patience, care, and responsibility—seeing their “work” literally bloom over time. Plus, it’s a great way to enjoy the last days of summer outdoors.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Celma Pinho Perry, founding educator Seton Montessori Institute and Schools in Clarendon Hills and North Barrington, Illinois.

Celma's influence on Montessori education spans across 3 continents and over 70 years. Her legacy will last forever thorough all of the children she reached over the years.

Our deepest condolences to Anna Perry and the Seton Montessori Institute Family.

Sensorial education in the Montessori classroom aims to develop and refine the five senses – tactile, visual, auditory, olfactory, and gustatory.
