This is how I teach homophones in my kindergarten classroom.
We had a Trolls/*NSYNC themed day. The homophone lesson is based on the *NSYNC song Bye, bye, bye (by, buy & bye). So they got a quick history lesson on *NSYNC, and we talked about how they are in the new Trolls movie. (And of course, we had to learn the Bye, Bye, Bye dance).
We compared some of our sight words with their homophones. (For example: be and bee). This is in connection with our sight words “one” to help us understand the connection between “one” and “won”.
First, we did an anchor chart comparing our high frequency words vs content words. Content words are academic words that have typically have a tangible meaning.
Then the students did their own mini version of the anchor chart.
We also made hats and coloring sheets.
We of course learned the bye bye bye dance.

I love the Quiet series by Charlotte Offsay! It is such a fun way to teach adjectives and onomatopoeia! My kindergarten students now love pointing out onomatopoeias!
Check out her latest book The Quiet Ocean! Your kids will love it!
