La diferencia entre AMÉRICA, HISPANOAMÉRICA, LATINOAMÉRICA e IBEROAMÉRICA*

América es el nombre designado por los europeos a las tierras “descubiertas”** por Cristóbal Colón en 1492. Este nombre es en honor a Américo Vespucio, comerciante y explorador italiano, quien más tarde las visitó y escribió sobre ellas para los europeos.

Hispanoamérica es el nombre dado a una parte del continente americano cuyos países tienen como lenguaje oficial al español. La palabra español deriva de Hispania que a su vez es el nombre dado por los romanos a la región donde hoy se encuentra España en la península ibérica.

Latinoamérica (o América Latina) es una región del continente americano cuyo lenguaje oficial se deriva del latín: el español, el portugués y en menor medida el francés.

Iberoamérica consiste en los países del continente americano que fueron colonia de los imperios de la península ibérica (España y Portugal) y cuya lengua oficial es el español y el portugués.
