Lincoln Park Cooperative Nursery School

Lincoln Park Cooperative Nursery School Lincoln Park Cooperative Nursery School is a high quality, part time preschool program for children aged 2.5 - 5 years old.

The school was founded in 1949 and is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Children. THE HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOL
In 1949, early childhood education was a new idea: the idea of a school for such, created by parents and run cooperatively as a non-profit corporation was even newer. Yet such a preschool took root and flourished in one of Chicago’s oldest, yet in many ways newest, neighborhoods. From the first half-dozen pioneering families who housed the classes in community churches, Lincoln Park Cooperative Nursery School (LPCNS) grew through the years in response to neighborhood needs. Since 1975, the school has owned its own building at 1753 North Fern Court, making it a permanent Lincoln Park institution. And just in time—in 1976, one of our first graduates enrolled his son, the first of many legacies. Lincoln Park Cooperative Nursery School is licensed by the State of Illinois, the City of Chicago and since 1986, has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Sound the alarm! These last two weeks, our JK class was inspired to create a fire station.
This special project presented so many opportunities for play-based learning: creative vision, collaboration, planning ahead, problem-solving, leadership, compromise, and a shared sense of pride. Children read books relating to firefighters, held planning meetings, shared stories about their own experiences with fire trucks, executed the construction of their vision with shared materials and props, made repairs, and even created a firefighter training school obstacle course.

Last week, classes observed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For our youngest preschoolers, teachers shared photos of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for children to interact with. For our oldest class, Junior Kindergarten, teachers went into detail about who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was, why we celebrate his birthday, and how his values help create a community of kindness.

We had our first snowfall here in Chicago and children were absolutely thrilled. We threw snowballs, dug holes, made snow castles and snow angels, and brought the snow inside to experiment with temperature and textures. What a fun week!
